The maker of Sue Bee Honey faces a class action lawsuit over claims that it misleads consumers into believing its products are “pure” and “all natural.”
Plaintiff Susan Tran alleges Sioux Honey Association violated California’s Unfair Competition Law, and in doing so, has deceptively acted in misleading her and others similarly situated, in believing that Sue Bee Honey is “100% pure.”
Tran claims that Sue Bee products contain a synthetic chemical called glyphosate, a biocide with negative health effects. Glyphosate is also one of the world’s most widely produced herbicides, and in 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer declared it a category 2A “probable” human carcinogen.
The Sue Bee Honey class action claims that by misleading the public in believing that its products are “natural,” Sioux Honey Association is not only able to take away market share from their competitors, but also can sell a higher volume of their products and charge higher prices.
Moreover, the class action alleges that because consumers rely on accurate label representations, the misleading and false marketing practices and advertising claims of their products allow Sioux Honey Association to realize sizable profits.
Having known that the ingredients of Sue Bee Products are not “natural” or “100% pure,” the plaintiff says she would have never purchased them.
However, Tran says that there was no reasonable way for her to know the true nature of Sue Bee products as knowledge of its ingredients requires laboratory testing and chemistry not available to the average consumer.
As a result of the misleading and concealed true nature of Sue Bee Honey, Tran says she and putative Class Members were injured in that they paid more for a product that was misrepresented.
Moreover, Trans claims she did not receive a product that measured up to her expectations and ingested a product that included an ingredient that “poses potential health risks.”
Additionally, the Sue Bee Honey class action lawsuit alleges the defendant unfairly benefited in profit and sales at the expense of consumers. Specifically this occurred by redirecting sales away from its competition.
Tran brings this class action on behalf of all California residents who bought Sue Bee Clover Honey, Aunt Sue’s Farmers Market Clover Honey or Aunt Sue’s Raw Honey within the applicable statue of limitations.
The plaintiff is seeking monetary relief, and in addition wants Sioux Honey Association to stop its alleged unfair and misleading business practices by putting an end to the representations that its Sue Bee products are “natural” and “pure.”
Tran is represented by Stephen R. Basser of Barrack, Rodos & Bacine, Lori G. Feldman and Courtney E. Macaroni of Levi & Korsinsky LLP, Kim E. Richman and Jaimie Mak of the Richman Law Group, and John G. Emerson of Emerson Scott LLP.
The Sue Bee Honey “100% Pure” Class Action Lawsuit is Susan Tran v. Sioux Honey Association Cooperative, Case No. 8:17-cv-00110, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, Southern Division.

This was 2017. It’s now 2022. What happened in this case? It must be settled by now. Is the honey now free of the pollutants?
