lawsuit settlementViewers are reporting to Top Class Actions that settlement checks have gone out in two class action lawsuits that settled last year: Citibank force-placed insurance and Michigan magazine subscriptions. Payments are ranging from less than $30 to several thousand dollars, according to viewer comments.

Citibank Force-Placed Insurance Settlement

It’s been nearly seven months since a federal court granted final approval to the Citibank class action settlement on Aug. 21, 2014, but checks are finally being mailed.

The first round of payments were mailed on March 20 to Class Members who submitted approved Claim Forms. Those who had a claim denied and resubmitted with the required documents will begin receiving payments after April 21, according to the Settlement Administrator.

Payment amounts are varying widely, depending on the amount of premiums that Citi charged for force-placed flood or hazard insurance. Some viewers have reported receiving several thousand dollars while others received under $30.

The Citibank force-placed insurance class action settlement resolves allegations that Citibank NA and CitiMortgage Inc. violated the rights of borrowers by unlawfully forcing them to carry excessive flood or hazard insurance. Defendants denied the allegations but agreed to a $110 million class action settlement in February 2014 to resolve the case and avoid the expense and uncertainty of going to trial.

Borrowers who were charged by Citi for lender-placed flood insurance from May 17, 2006 through April 2, 2014, and/or for lender-placed hazard/wind insurance from Jan. 1, 2007 through April 2, 2014 had until Jan. 1, 2015 to file a claim to receive a payment equal to 8% and/or 12.5%, respectively, of the net amount of premiums that Citi charged during those time periods.

The Citibank Force-Placed Insurance Class Action Settlement resolves the following cases:  Gordon Casey, et al. v. Citibank NA, et al., Case No. 5:12-cv-00820 and Celeste Coonan v. Citibank NA, et al., Case No. 1:13-cv-00353, both in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York.

Michigan Magazine Subscription Settlement

Michigan residents that subscribed to magazines published by Bauer Publishing Co., LP were eligible to participate in a class action settlement over allegations the company disclosed their subscription information to third parties for marketing purposes without their permission, in violation of Michigan privacy law.

Class Members included residents who subscribed to one or more of the following magazines prior to Sept. 26, 2014, and subsequently had their information disclosed by Bauer to a third party:

  • In Touch Weekly
  • Life & Style Weekly
  • Closer
  • J-14
  • Twist
  • M
  • Girls’ World
  • ASTROgirl
  • QuizFest
  • Yikes!
  • Life Story
  • First for Women
  • Women’s World
  • Soaps in Depth
  • iD Magazine

The deadline to file a claim for the Michigan magazine subscription class action settlement was Feb. 19, 2015.

According to the terms of the class action settlement, Class Members could claim a “potential” award of $175. Viewers are reporting that the actual payments they’re receiving are much lower at $30.63. This is because, as stated in the settlement agreement, payments will be distributed on a pro rata basis. Since so many people filed valid claims, the amount of money available to pay each Class Member from the $775,000 settlement fund was significantly reduced.

A federal judge granted final approval to the settlement on Jan. 6.

The Michigan Magazine Subscription Class Action Settlement is Halaburda v. Bauer Publishing Co. LP, Case No. 2:12-cv-12831-GCS-RSW, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

I received my check of $85.87 wow really!! I still have it just to laugh at sometimes! I know it’s been two years but I just saw this article!! I know this is a dumb question but why are they still charging me hazard insurance if the case was closed? Anyways I would like to see the checks for thousands, I’m hearing about! Probably in the attorneys hands! Just playing don’t try and sue me or we can call it even and I’ll give you this $85.87 dollar check back! It seems like before the settled they would of looked up how many people it actually affected ! Instead they said the money ran out! Lol
