Many people get in car accidents every year, however some have suffered an unnecessary car accident in GM vehicles because of manufacturer defects.
Recently, General Motors, or GM, closed the deal on a gigantic auto defect settlement for those customers who have been affected by manufacturer defects in their vehicles.
Among the manufacturing defects that could cause a car accident in GM vehicles is a problem with the power steering. Various GM recalls have made an impact on millions of Americans and according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1.3 million cars have been affected by the GM power steering recall alone.
This defect can cause the power steering to fail unexpectedly which can result in a car accident in GM vehicles.
Notably, nearly 1.2 million additional GM vehicles were recalled in March 2014 with defective side impact airbags. Reportedly, the airbags have the possibility to not inflate during a car accident in GM vehicles.
Allegedly, when the wiring harness inside the side airbags gets pinched, this prevents the seat-mounted side impact airbags from deploying. During a car accident in GM vehicles, this can be dangerous if not fatal.
Both manufacturer defects have been known to be the cause of fatal or life-threatening incidents.
Other recalls include a frontal airbag software defect and an ignition switch defect. The frontal airbag defect is a result of faulty software, critics claim, and can also be life-threatening in the event of a car accident in GM vehicles.
The ignition switch defect is perhaps the most serious. In an affected General Motors car, if the ignition switch is accidentally bumped to the “off” position, the car turns off. Reportedly, more than 100 deaths have been attributed to this defect.
GM allegedly knew about the defects as early as 2001, but did not warn customers until the recall in 2014.
There are many General Motors vehicles included in the GM recalls.
