LogMeIn subscription fee class action lawsuitLogMeIn Inc. has been hit with a class action lawsuit alleging that the app seller suddenly imposed a $99 annual subscription fee to use its remote access Ignition app. The company had offered a free version of this service for the last 10 years.

The LogMeIn Ignition app allows users to access and control their computers from their iPhones or iPads. According to the LogMeIn website, the Ignition app is “One app to control all your information. With one touch, you can directly control all of your computers from your iPad or iPhone. It’s anywhere, anytime access to everything on your PC or Mac – all your files, applications and desktops – right at your fingertips.”

According to the class action lawsuit, consumers had previously been able to purchase the Ignition app for a one-time fee of $29.99. However, in January, LogMeIn “abruptly” notified users they would no longer be able to use the app without purchasing a subscription to LogMeIn Pro. The costs of the LogMeIn Pro subscriptions range from $99 per year for individual consumers, up to $449 per year for businesses.

LogMeIn’s January announcement outraged the app’s users. According to the announcement, which is posted on the company’s website, LogMeIn indicated that it would “gradually migrate users of LogMeIn-branded remote access offerings and Ignition-branded remote access offerings to a single, premium access product. Please note that once you log into your account there is a seven day window to upgrade.”

Plaintiff Darren Handy filed the LogMeIn class action lawsuit on August 28. He alleges his Ignition app stopped working for him on August 19. “In inducing plaintiff to purchase defendant’s app, defendant did not inform plaintiff that additional fees beyond the $29.99 already paid to download the app would ever be required to continue usage of Ignition,” the LogMeIn class action lawsuit says.

LogMeIn Free users have reported being kicked out of their accounts after the grace period unless they ponied up $49 for a year-long LogMeIn Pro subscription. Users with the LogMeIn Ignition app were reportedly given a 6-month upgrade to a premium account.

The LogMeIn class action lawsuit brings allegations of unfair competition and fraud. Handy is seeking Class certification, an injunction and restitution.

Handy is represented by Matthew Loker of Kazerouni Law Group.

The LogMeIn Subscription Fee Class Action Lawsuit is Darren Handy v. LogMeIn Inc., Case No. 1:14-at-00645, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California.
