The data security breach announcement comes around the same time that 21st Century Oncology agreed to pay a $34.7 million settlement for a billing fraud case.

What is 21st Century Oncology?

21st Century Oncology is a provider of cancer care services. The cancer care provider is one of the largest in the United States.  The company has 181 treatment centers, 145 of which are located in 17 states.  These states include Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, and several others. 21st Century Oncology has been providing cancer care services for over 30 years.

21st Century Oncology Data Security Breach

The data security breach was first announced to the public on March 4, 2016.  The company recently confirmed that they knew about the data breach nearly four months before they notified the public, in November of 2015.  The company believes the actual data breach occurred a month earlier in October 2015.  According to 21st Century Oncology the FBI asked them to hold off making a public announcement until after the government had completed their investigation.The data security breach may have effected as many as 2.2 million patients. These patients may have had their personal information exposed.  Information that may have been gathered by hackers includes names, social security numbers, physicians’ names, treatment information, medical diagnoses, and insurance information.  While 21st Century Oncology believes that none of the exposed patient information has been misused since the data security breach, the company is offering its patients a free subscription for one year to identity theft protection services.

21st Century Oncology Fraud Settlement

The data security breach comes shortly after a major multi-milliond ollar fraud settlement was made by the company. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the settlement resolved claims that the cancer care company performed and billed patients for procedures that were not medical necessary.  According to the settlement, the company allegedly improperly billed for a procedure known as Gamma Function. The purpose of this procedure is to measure the exit dose of radiation after a patient received radiation treatment. The Justice Department alleged that 21st Century Oncology charged patients for this procedure when the procedure had no medically appropriate purpose.
