GM ignition switch recall class action lawsuit

On Monday, General Motors announced a recall of an additional 8.2 million vehicles due to faulty ignition switches, bringing the total number of GM recalls this year to more than 28 million vehicles. The latest GM recall includes seven vehicles, including 1997-2005 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix and 2003-2014 Cadillac CTS. According to GM, the recall was issued due to “unintended ignition key rotation.”

The motor company indicated that it was aware of three deaths, seven crashes and eight injuries involving the vehicles affected by the latest recall. However, GM says it is not certain that the crashes were caused by the ignition switch defect. GM is encouraging owners of the recalled vehicles to take everything off of their key rings, leaving only the ignition key, until the cars are repaired.

GM has come under fire for its handling of the ignition switch defect, which causes the ignition switch to unexpectedly shift out of the “run” position, causing a partial loss of electrical power that may lead the engine to shut off unexpectedly. Reports have indicated the GM ignition switch defect has also resulted in airbags failing to deploy during a crash.

In addition to Monday’s ignition switch recall, GM announced four recalls related to an electrical short in the driver’s side door that may affect the functionality of the power locks and window. The additional GM recalls cover at least 200,000 vehicles.

GM has been hit with class action lawsuits and individual lawsuits that accuse the motor company of concealing the ignition switch defect. Documents suggest GM may have been aware of the ignition switch defect as early as 2001. In response to the growing number of ignition switch lawsuits, GM has initiated a new ignition switch settlement program that offers compensation to victims of accidents caused by the ignition switch defect. People with eligible claims could receive at least $200,000 from the settlement. In some cases, victims or their legal representatives could receive millions of dollars in compensation.
