2015 Chevrolet Tahoe Included in GM Power Steering Assist Defect RecallGM is recalling nearly 1 million SUVs and trucks, and other manufactured vehicles, including the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, due to power steering failures that have reportedly caused nearly 30 vehicle crashes.

According to GM, recalled vehicles include the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the Cadillac Escalade, Suburban, and GMC Yukon SUVs.

Overview: GM Power Steering

In an announcement made in September 2018, GM says that it was recalling nearly 1,015,918 pickup trucks and SUVs. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem with the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and other vehicles is that the power steering, or Electric Power Steering (EPS) assist, seems to fail intermittently where it will suddenly stop working for a mere second before it starts back up again.

Electrical and software issues seem to be linked to the power steering assist problems. The power steering assist is a device that makes driving much easier as it helps drivers turn the wheel more easily.

With a loss of the power steering assist, drivers will either see that warning lights on the dashboard are all off or disabled or that a warning light has popped up warning them of a power steering loss. During this loss, moreover, other systems may also shut down, such as traction control, warning chimes, power door locks, electrical systems, and cruise control.

According to the NHTSA, “If EPS is lost and then suddenly returns, the driver may have difficulty steering the vehicle, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.”

While GM says that they are aware of the defect, they have not been aware of any deaths reported and linked with the alleged defect.

According to GM spokesperson Tom Wilkinson, “If you have a weak connection and one or more high amperage systems put too much load on it, you can get a voltage drop. The high load on the steering gear can contribute to the voltage drop, but a number of things also can contribute to a voltage drop and affect steering assist.”

Following these reported issues, GM has made changes to the electrical systems in the 2015 Chevy Tahoe and other affected models. Changes were made with improvements to battery cables, terminals, connectors, steering system grounds, and steering gear.

How the recall will take place has not yet been announced. However, owners are able to contact GMC, Chevrolet, and Cadillac for additional questions.

I am currently dealing with this as I have a 2015 chevy Tahoe and my EPS went out 5 days ago. The dealership is saying my “vin” doesn’t pull a recall. Even though I had an auto body shop pull the code that was firing due to the loss of connection with EPS

I financed and 2015 Chevy Tahoe right when my warranty expired my power steering went out. Now they are saying I have to pay 2600.00 to get fixed.

They said there was a recall but it was fixed before I bought it and now Chevy won’t fix it

I was driving one day and it completely went out thank God I was going straight at the time.
