2011 Hyundai Sonata Recall Issued
By Kimberly Mirando

2011 Hyundai SonataHyundai is recalling nearly 139,500 of its 2011 Sonatas due to a steering defect that could cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the manufacturing defect is caused by connections in the steering column being either improperly assembled or insufficiently tightened. That means the driver could suddenly experience difficulty steering or even complete loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash, injury and even death.

Hyundai said it had at least eight reports of steering failures, but it was not aware of any accidents being cause by the defect.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating the Sonatas in late August after at least two consumers complained that the steering shaft came loose, causing them to completely lose the ability to steer the car. The Kia Soul is also under investigation after at least one person complained of the same problem. The Kia Soul is also made by Hyundai, but uses different parts.

The recalled Hyundai vehicles include all Sonatas assembled at its plant in Montgomery, Alabama, from December 11, 2009 to September 10, 2010.

No class action lawsuits have been filed since the 2011 Hyundai Sonata recall was issued September 23, but there’s a good chance lawyers are working on one now. Ford is facing at least one class action lawsuit after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into axle failures on its 1999-2003 Ford Windstars. And who can forget the hundreds of lawsuits Toyota is facing after it recalled millions of vehicles this summer for problems ranging from gas pedals sticking, floor mats getting stuck under the gas pedal, and brake failures.

If you experienced difficulty steering a Hyundai Sonata and believe it could be caused by a manufacturing defect, you may have the right to be reimbursed for repair costs and other damages. Contact our lawyer network for a free and confidential consultation to see if you have a case.
