Providing an affordable health insurance plan with robust coverage is one of the most attractive benefits a company can offer its employees. Whereas some organizations make considerable efforts to promote healthcare and ensure each employee has access to coverage, other organizations prioritize profit over people and impose premium surcharges on staff members to reduce expenses.

However, this cost-cutting approach means a more significant financial burden for the employee.

What is a healthcaresurcharge?

Most healthcare enrollees anticipate paying a monthly premium for their coverage. However, some individuals may incur premium surcharges depending on lifestyle factors or coverage selection.

Employers have applied premium surcharges in certain situations to encourage employees to fully optimize their coverage. Alternatively, these surcharges have also been leveraged to help offset company costs.

What kinds of healthcaresurcharges are employees paying?

Employers will apply surcharges for a variety of situations. Three common examples include โ€œwellnessโ€ fees, charges applied to those who use tobacco, charges applied to those who are not vaccinated.

Tobacco Surcharge

The tobacco or โ€œNicotine Surchargeโ€ is applied to anyone who uses tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco. This surcharge is sometimes promoted as a wellness program, where employers offer a โ€œreduced premiumโ€ to employees who do not use tobacco or choose to quit.

Unvaccinated Surcharge

Some employers have implemented an insurance surcharge for employees that refuse or opt out of certain vaccinations.
