A Central National Bank and Numi settlement provides $4 million in benefits to consumers forced to use Numi Prestige release cards when released from detention facilities.
The settlement benefits individuals whose money a detention facility returned to them via a Numi release card after July 2014. More than 1,000 detention facilities are included in this settlement, with a full list available on the settlement website.
Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit claim that, when they were arrested, the detention facilities confiscated their personal property and cash. However, when returned as legally required, the facilities distributed the money through Numi Prestige release cards. According to the former detainees, Numi and Central National Bank charged unfair fees on these release cards which caused financial harm to consumers.
Numi Financial is a prepaid card provider that partners with government agencies, such as correction facilities, to provide disbursement and funds management solutions.
Numi and CNB havenโt admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay up to $4 million to resolve the class action lawsuit.
Under the terms of the Numi settlement, class members can receive up to three times the amount they paid in fees on their Numi release cards. These payments will vary and may be reduced on a pro rata basis depending on the number of valid claims submitted. No payment estimates are available at this time, though each claimant will receive at least $15.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Nov. 19, 2024.
The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for Dec. 10, 2024.
To receive Numi settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Nov. 19, 2024.
