Patients place a high degree of trust in their insurance carriers. Individuals trust that insurance companies will help make healthcare affordable. Additionally, patients trust these organizations to properly secure extremely sensitive information, such as Social Security numbers and medical records.
However, when one of the nation’s largest insurance providers is allegedly unable to adequately safeguard digital systems, a resulting data breach has the potential to cause widespread issues for doctors, patients and the healthcare system as a whole.
In early 2024, Change Healthcare, a subsidiary of United Healthcare Group, announced a cybersecurity incident that impacted millions of patients. While the investigation into this attack continues, patients are left to manage the consequences.

United Healthcaredata breach compromised patient medical records
In February 2024, United Healthcare experienced a cybersecurity incident that resulted in the unauthorized access of patient and provider information. Hackers affiliated with the Russian-based cybercriminal group known as ALPHV or BlackCat exploited a vulnerability in the technology infrastructure of a recently acquired UnitedHealth subsidiary, Change Healthcare. This subsidiary utilized older technology that introduced cyber risks.
According to reports, the hackers allegedly took approximately 6 terabytes of personally identifiable information in the ransomware attack. This information includes names, addresses, Social Security numbers and sensitive medical records. These records could contain sensitive diagnoses, treatments, and medical histories that reveal everything from medical procedures to mental health disorders to diagnoses of cancer to sexually transmitted infections. It is believed some of this data has since been published on the dark web.
The data breach remains under active investigation as United Healthcare works to address the data exposure, inform affected parties and determine the next steps.
How do I know if my information was compromised in the data breach?
United Healthcare estimates that this security incident potentially impacted approximately 131 million patients and providers. The company has been attempting to identify individuals whose information may have been involved and to directly notify those who have been confirmed to be affected. Notifications have already begun for some impacted parties; however, efforts are ongoing to identify others and ensure all relevant parties are made aware of the situation.
If you have been notified or have reason to believe that your personal information was compromised in this data breach, there are protective steps you can take. First, update your passwords for all online accounts. Consider enabling two-factor authentication for any accounts that offer this security feature, as it provides an extra layer of protection for your login credentials. Additionally, monitor your accounts closely for suspicious or unauthorized activity and immediately report anything suspicious.
