Unum’s Claim Denial Tactics Revealed: Deny, Delay, Discontinue

By Andrea Gressman

Unum disability insurance denialIt has been proven time and time again that Unum will stop at nothing to save a buck. However, what is more alarming is that the insurance company actually has a method to their madness. This method can be referred to as the “3 Deceptive D’s.” They first deny the claim, they then delay the benefits, and finally — they discontinue the policy.

Unum is a company that has a presence around the world. However, their practices here in the United States have been headline news for many years now. The idea is that the policy holder purchases an insurance policy in case they are injured in some way that renders them disabled. If that occurs, they are supposed to be able to submit a claim to their trusty insurance provider and receive the benefits from their disability insurance.

It sounds easy enough, but for years now Unum has made this process anything but easy. Sadder yet, this often comes at the most desperate time in a person’s life. After all, they have just gone through something significant that has caused them to become disabled. The last thing they need is to receive the runaround from their insurance company that they are supposed to be able to trust to be there in their time of need. But this is exactly what Unum is counting on. Here is how it works.

Step 1: Unum’s Claim Denials

This is the first step to the process of keeping Unum’s policy holders from receiving what they are entitled to. The policy holder files a claim because they have been recently disabled. Keep in mind that these are legitimate claims. However, Unum automatically denies the claim. It has been revealed in previous Unum lawsuits that Unum employees actually receive incentives for denying claims and that there are actual quotas for denying so many claims to ensure Unum’s profit margins.

Step 2: Unum’s Delays

The Unum’s delay process can affect a number of items in the claims process. Unum can delay in approving your legitimate claim through the appeals process of the original denial. It can delay in communication. It can delay in the payment of an approved claim. It can delay and request that you file for Social Security disability. The point here is that if there is a way to delay, Unum will find it. All of these Unum delay tactics, as well as others, have been documented in many different Unum lawsuits filed on behalf of Unum claims victims.

Step 3: Unum’s Discontinuance of Policies

So in the final step, regardless of whether the policy holder has been approved or denied, Unum will find some way to discontinue the policy. Throughout the claims process Unum is documenting each and every move the policy holder makes. They will document whether or not the policy holder is late in a response, if they fail to provide certain information, if they fail to apply for something like Social Security disability, or any other item they feel that they can eventually use against the policy holder. They will later use these as grounds to cancel the Unum policy all together.

In many situations, they will pay for a while and then just abruptly stop payment and discontinue the policy. Unum may site that the policy holder is no longer considered to be disabled or a number of other reasons they can find to use.

Basically, Unum is taking advantage of the policy holder’s situation. They know that when someone faces a disability it is a very difficult time. They know that they may not have the normal amount of energy and is some cases no energy at all to fight their claim. They use the tactics listed above in an effort to wear down the policy holder. Ultimately, the only recourse a policy holder has is to file a Unum lawsuit against the company.

Unum is counting on the fact that the majority of their policy holders that they have wrongly denied will not consult a Unum lawsuit attorney. However, it is important that Unum be held accountable for each and every claim that they have wrongly denied. This will be the only way that Unum will ultimately change their shady practices and policy holders will receive the compensation they deserve.
