Unum Claim Denial Tactics Make Disability Worse for Some Policyholders

By Andrea Gressman

Unum disability insurance denialYou feel like you have done everything right. You work hard, you purchase your Unum disability insurance just in case the worst case scenario happens, and then one day that “worst” does happen. That is hard enough for anyone to deal with — the idea that you may never be able to go back to work and the pain and suffering you will be forced to endure.

But then your Unum disability claim is denied. How can this be? You’ve done everything correctly. You aren’t trying to defraud anyone – you just want the benefits you used your hard-earned money to pay for. There must be some mistake. So, you appeal, and again you’re denied.
However, you don’t just receive a denial from Unum — they put you through the ringer. They make you jump through hoops and accuse you of all kinds of different things. You also have to deal with their harassing phone calls and their abusive language.

Then, before you know it, your disability becomes worse because you can’t focus on getting better. Instead, you have to deal with the huge amounts of stress Unum causes by simply not doing what they are supposed to do. You watch your assets dwindle to nothing and after working hard and preparing, it seems to mean nothing.

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. This same story has happened to hundreds of Unum policyholders for over a decade now. And hundreds of people have made the claim that going through Unum’s benefit approval process has actually made their disability worse. It has also been reported that some Unum policyholders are specifically seeking counseling and other types of therapy just to deal with the heavy amount of stress that Unum caused them.

Dealing with insurance companies never seems to be easy and we typically avoid doing so at all cost.  But Unum is set apart even in their own industry. Due to Unum’s terrible reputation alone, people simply do not want to deal with them and know they are going to be on an uphill battle. Their tactics have been even described as “unlawful” in certain courts. It has also been reported that Unum makes their profits by targeting legitimate claims and denying them.

It seems farfetched to think that dealing with an insurance company would make your disability worse. That is until you have actually been forced to deal with Unum yourself. Then you begin to understand as they are just so very difficult, if not impossible, to deal with. Many have reported that after dealing with Unum that their pain becomes more severe as the stress and tension of dealing with the Unum reps persists. They struggle with a positive mental outlook as well and some have even wanted to just give up.

Don’t let this happen to you. If you have a disability and Unum keeps denying you benefits that are legitimately yours then you need to seek the counsel of a qualified Unum lawsuit attorney.
