Unum Claim Denial Tactics Lead to Lawsuits

By Kimberly Mirando

Unum claim denialMillions of Americans have disability insurance policies through Unum (formerly known as Unum Provident) and its subsidiaries. As the largest disability insurance providers in the U.S., Unum should be trusted — but it’s not. Dozens of policyholders have come forward over the years alleging the company denied legitimate disability claims and refused to payout policies they spent thousands of dollars paying in to.

Unum has denied countless insurance claims based on deceitful tactics designed to keep policyholders from getting the money they deserve. Some of these deceitful Unum denial tactics include:

* Arguing that a claim is a pre-existing condition
* Demanding repeated requests for medical records
* Ignoring evidence presented in medical records
* Denying a claim without any medical examination
* Changing policies after claims are filed, without the policyholder’s consent or knowledge
* Refusing to acknowledge certain claims as a disability, especially mental disorders, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia
* Repeatedly denying a claim with the intent to wear the claimant down to a lower settlement

These tactics have been detailed in numerous Unum claim denial lawsuits filed against Unum and its subsidiaries, including Unum Provident, Metropolitan Life, Provident Life, Colonial Life, John Hancock, MetLife, and more.

Lawsuits filed against Unum accuse the company of fraud and breach of contract for denying legitimate claims, prematurely terminating disability payments or for unreasonably delaying payments. Millions of dollars in Unum lawsuit settlements have been paid over the years to policyholders who sued the insurer through an Unum lawsuit or Unum class action lawsuit.
