Citigroup discrimination lawsuit overview:
- Who: Ardith Lindsey filed a lawsuit against Citigroup Global Markets Inc.
- Why: Lindsey claims Citigroup tolerates a work environment where women like herself allegedly face sexual harassment, sexual assault and gender discrimination.
- Where: The lawsuit was filed in New York federal court.
A managing director at Citigroup who is currently on a leave of absence claims she has faced “horrifying” sexual harassment, sexual assault and gender discrimination while working for the bank since 2007.
Plaintiff Ardith Lindsey — who has worked for Citigroup for more than 16 years — claims many senior male executives at the bank have created an environment that is “openly and notoriously hostile to women.”
Lindsey argues this alleged hostility is known about and tolerated by Citigroup, which she claims has, in some instances, “encouraged a locker room environment on its trading floor” where male employees have “treated women as sexual objects and denigrated their accomplishments.
“In many instances, Citi did nothing to stop the egregious legal violations despite Lindsey and other women making complaints,” the Citigroup lawsuit states.
Male executives at Citigroup ranked, rated appearance of female coworkers, says suit
Lindsey claims male executives at Citigroup would rank and rate the appearance of their female coworkers, openly discuss which ones they wanted to have sex with, mock sexual harassment trainings and exclude women from professional opportunities, among other things.
“In this environment, numerous male executives in the Equities division regularly flouted the anti-discrimination and harassment laws without consequences,” the Citigroup lawsuit states.
Lindsey argues she was repeatedly subjected to “extreme sexual harassment” and, despite fear of retribution she claims executives warned her of, ultimately decided last year that she had “no choice” but to confront Citigroup.
“As a result of defendant’s unlawful acts, plaintiff has suffered and will continue to suffer irreparable injury, emotional distress, reputational injury and other compensable damages,” the Citigroup lawsuit states.
Lindsey claims Citigroup is guilty of negligent hiring, negligent retention, and/or negligent supervision and of discrimination under New York City Human Rights Law.
The plaintiff is demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory relief along with an award of compensatory and punitive damages.
In other news involving Citigroup, a class action lawsuit was filed against it and three additional major banks in June over claims they conspired in online chatrooms and on electronic devices to fix the price of British pound sterling denominated UK government bonds.
