Disabled Woman Has Unum Disability Payments Revoked
By Jessica Tyner
There are mounting stories about Unum policyholders being denied their claims, and sometimes getting their approved claims revoked without explanation. This has been going on for years, such as the case with “Linda,” who was in a serious collision in 1997 that left her disabled. She filed and was approved for Unum disability benefits, but mysteriously in 2002 — five full years later — her compensation was revoked with no word from the provider.
According to Linda, it initially took Unum one full year to even start paying her disability after extensive discussions with her doctors and looking into her medical records. She had been a paying subscriber to Unum for 15 years before getting into the accident. When the payments ceased, she called Unum and was told something along the lines of “that’s our policy” with no further explanation.
Unum Victims Turn to Social Security
Linda assumed that there had been a mistake, so she continued making her monthly premium payments to the company. Years later, she still hasn’t received any additional disability payments from Unum. She’s still disabled and, like others in her situation, she resorted to social security benefits, which don’t provide nearly as much compensation. Living on a tight budget and unable to work, Unum’s refusal to pay for her rightful compensation, which they originally approved, has created a severe financial burden.
Once Linda began researching why this happened, she discovered she was not alone. There are many other Unum victims like her, although it seems she was “lucky” to have even received some payments. Other Unum subscribers claim they were denied when they should have easily been accepted due to disabilities.
Preying on the Weak
Of course, when someone has been in a serious accident or otherwise becomes disabled, the last thing they should deal with is paperwork and trying to learn the intricate ropes of an insurance system. Some Unum lawsuit plaintiffs say that Unum uses tricks, is purposefully vague, and delays insurance claims, perhaps hoping that it becomes too difficult or frustrating for the insured.
Ideally, disability insurance should be clear-cut and straightforward since the insured is dealing with a very difficult situation. They may not be functioning at full capacity and have a schedule filled with rehabilitation, surgery or other medical procedures. By making things as difficult as possible, wrongfully denying claims and stopping payments for no reason, Unum is taking advantage of the very people they’re supposed to serve.
Are You Covered Under Unum?
If you have Unum disability and have been denied a claim or your payments have stopped for no reason, you might have an Unum legal claim. If you have Unum and have not filed a lawsuit to retrieve your benefits, it may not be too late.
