Home schooling education growth overview:
- Who: The Washington Post released an analysis which showed homeschooling is the fastest growing form of education in the US.
- Why: The analysis revealed many parents who adopted homeschooling at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic continued doing so during the 2022-2023 academic year.
- Where: The Washington Post analysis encompassed a number of US states.
Home schooling is currently the fastest growing form of education in America, with parents who adopted the practice at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic having largely continued it during the 2022-2023 academic school year.
The revelation is the result of a recent Washington Post analysis, which showed that a number of states have seen an increase in the percentage of home-school student enrollment since the 2017-2018 school year.
In states with comparable enrollment figures, the number of students who were homeschooled increased by 51% during the past six school years, while enrollment in public schools dropped by 4% and enrollment in private schools only increased by 7%, according to the analysis.
The Washington Post said it found the increase in homeschooling was not limited by geography, politics, or demographics, meanwhile, with the number increasing a similarly high percentage in small cities like Anderson, S.C., and in a Bronx school district, for example.
District quality not a factor in rise of homeschooled students, says analysis
During the 2021-2022 academic school year, the Washington Post found that, of the 390 school districts analyzed, there was at least one home-schooled child for every 10 students — roughly quadruple the amount of school districts with rates that high during 2017-2018.
The Washington Post said it did not find any correlation between a school district’s standardized testing scores — a way of measuring quality — and the amount of children who were pulled out to go into homeschooling.
On the contrary, the analysis revealed that some school districts which would be considered to be of the highest quality saw some of the largest influxes in home school enrollment during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Washington Post.
The analysis did not cover every state, however the Washington Post said it estimates that there are currently between 1.9 million and 2.7 million home-schooled children in the US, compared to the last official federal estimate of 1.5 million from 2019.
In other news involving educational facilities, the state of Connecticut filed a lawsuit against the now-closed Stone Academy and its owner Joseph Bierbaum last month over claims its students were not provided with the training they had been promised.
Stone Academy has also been accused of using expensive enrollment fees to enrich its owners and their other businesses, to the school’s detriment.
