Palm trees and storm clouds After Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas and the costs of the Southeastern United States in Aug. 2019, the storm left devastation in its wake. The worst of the storm hit the Bahamas, but many areas across Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina were affected as well.

About $1 billion worth of damage was done to the southeast U.S., according to USA Today. Some counties had to wait several months before being declared eligible for FEMA assistance for Hurricane Dorian damage.

On Dec. 10, 2019, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that two additional Florida counties that had been hit by Hurricane Dorian were eligible to apply for assistance from FEMA. These two counties were Broward and Volusia, joining a group of 12 other Florida counties that had already been declared to be eligible for public assistance after Dorian.

Florida counties eligible for FEMA assistance for Hurricane Dorian through the Public Assistance program include the following:

  • Broward
  • Volusia
  • Brevard
  • Duval
  • Flagler
  • Indian River
  • Martin
  • Nassau
  • Osceola
  • Palm Beach
  • Putnam
  • Seminole
  • Johns
  • Lucie

According to the agency’s website, FEMA assistance for Hurricane Dorian can help with reimbursing people for the cost of debris removal, life-saving emergency protective measures, and the repair, replacement, or restoration of facilities (such as buildings, roads, and utilities) that were damaged by the disaster.

“Recovery and restoration efforts are a vital part of making our community stronger and, working together with state and federal agencies, Volusia County has been added on to the Major Declaration for Public Assistance for the Categories A-G for Hurricane Dorian,” said Jim Judge, the director of emergency management for Volusia. “These categories include the initial emergency work and work required for the repair or restoration of damaged public facilities and property related to the hurricane.

“Organizations affected by physical or economic damage as a result of Hurricane Dorian now have the opportunity to reach out for assistance,” said Judge.

Filing a Hurricane Insurance Claim

If you were affected by Hurricane Dorian, dealing with the damage and facing the hurricane damage cost in the aftermath can be overwhelming—even if you are insured. It’s important to make sure that you are fully compensated for any losses you may have suffered. In some cases, even if you have already been compensated for some of the damages by your insurance company—or even if you’ve already cashed the check—you may not have been paid in full, so you may still be eligible for additional compensation money.

Dealing with insurance can be a daunting prospect, especially in the wake of the damage caused by a hurricane, so Top Class Actions has laid the groundwork for you by connecting you with an experienced attorney. Consulting an attorney can help you make sure that you receive the full and proper compensation for hurricane damage cost to which you are entitled.
