A storm wind stirred the palms of the coastHurricane Dorian hit several areas in early September, ranging from the Bahamas to Atlantic Canada and causing significant damage. The hurricane damage was the most devastating in the Bahamas, with tens of thousands of people in the Bahamas left homeless, thousands missing in the aftermath, and dozens killed according to CBS News.

Americans and Canadians hit by the hurricane have also been experiencing significant issues. North Carolina has suffered from serious flooding, and hundreds of thousands of both homes and businesses lost power in Canada.

Since the hurricane hit, cleanup has been ongoing. The affected areas of Canada suffered from sustained winds ranging from 56 to 98 miles per hour.

Now, more than a month later, the hurricane damage cost is becoming more clear. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, Hurricane Dorian has caused more than $105 million CAD (or $78.9 million USD) in insured damage.

About 70 percent of this total hurricane damage cost is made up of damage to personal property, another 25 percent is for commercial property, and the remaining amount is for automobile damage.

Homes and businesses were flooded, and roads were washed out. In a few cases, some homes were actually blown off their foundations.

“Hurricane Dorian is another example of how devastating Mother Nature can be,” said Amanda Dean, the vice president for the IBC’s Atlantic region. “Severe, unpredictable weather like this is becoming more frequent, resulting in higher costs to homeowners, insurers, and governments. Last year, insured damage from severe weather across Canada exceeded $2 billion, the fourth-highest amount of annual losses on record. That alarming trend has continued in 2019, with over $1 billion in insured losses recorded already this year.”

The increased frequency and severity of hurricanes like Dorian has been linked with the changing climate. IBC said that it is working across all levels of government in order to help lessen the effects of increasingly extreme weather.

Filing a Hurricane Insurance Claim

If you’ve been hit with a hurricane, dealing with the damage and facing the hurricane damage cost in the aftermath can be overwhelming, even if you are insured. It’s important to make sure that you are fully compensated for any losses you may have suffered.

In some cases, even if you have already been compensated for some of the damages by your insurance company—or even if you’ve already cashed the check—you may not have been paid in full, so you may still be eligible for additional compensation money.

Filing a lawsuit can be a daunting prospect, especially in the wake of the damage caused by a hurricane, so Top Class Actions has laid the groundwork for you by connecting you with an experienced attorney. Consulting an attorney can help you make sure that you receive the full and proper compensation for hurricane damage cost to which you are entitled.
