Millions of GM vehicles have been the target of recall efforts over the last several years. Unfortunately, due to the defects in these vehicles, a number of individuals have been the victim of a car accident caused by a GM defect.
Several GM defects have resulted in recalls. One of the most widely publicized of these is the GM ignition switch defect. This defect affects cars from small economy vehicles to luxury vehicles and SUVs.
The GM ignition switch defect could cause the vehicle to turn off if the key is bumped by a driver’s knee or jostled when the vehicle hits a bump in the road. This ignition switch defect could happen at any time, and it has even happened while drivers were on the freeway traveling at high speed.
More than 100 individuals have died as a result of a car accident linked to a GM defect in the ignition switch. Plaintiffs who have gone on to file ignition switch lawsuits against GM have stated that the company knew of this defect as far back as 2001 but did not issue a recall until 13 years later in 2014.
Two GM airbag defect recalls have also been issued. One airbag recall is related to the side-impact airbags. The wiring harness in the airbag mechanism can become pinched. As a result, the airbags may not inflate when they are needed during a crash.
The frontal airbags are also affected in many GM vehicles due to a software defect. This defect prevents the airbags from deploying in many automobiles.
A power steering vehicle recall was also issued by GM. The power steering defect causes the power steering to suddenly fail in the vehicle. When this happens, the driver may lose control of the vehicle and could be at risk for a collision.
Overall, nearly 30 different vehicles are affected by the various GM recalls. Buicks, Chevys, Pontiacs, Cadillacs, Saturns, Oldsmobiles and a single GMC SUV were included in the recalls over the span of several years.
