A Wisconsin resident recently filed a lawsuit against Unum Life Insurance, alleging that the company denied long-term disability benefits she was entitled to.
According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff, Teresa W., was covered under a disability insurance policy through Unum.
In February 2016, Teresa suffered from severe injuries during a car accident, disabling her and qualifying her for her disability benefits according to the policy from Unum.
Unum initially offered a settlement amount to partially cover the medical expenses, short-term loss of earnings, pain, suffering, and loss of enjoyment of life felt as a result of her car accident and subsequent injuries.
However, this lawsuit alleges that Unum ultimately denied long-term disability benefits to the plaintiff for her injuries, expenses, and suffering, instead seeking recovery for certain previously paid benefits.
The lawsuit claims that the plaintiff is “entitled to receive ongoing long-term disability benefits from Unum” that she had been denied.
Teresa is not the first plaintiff suffering from a disability to be improperly denied long-term disability benefits by Unum Life Insurance. Disabled consumers who had exhausted all administrative means of appealing Unum’s denied long-term disability benefits have the option of pursuing litigation.
Other plaintiffs have come forward with their own allegations in recent years, claiming that Unum unfairly denied long-term disability benefits, placing company profit over consumer health and safety.
Filing a Unum Lawsuit Over Denied Long-Term Disability Benefits
Unum Life Insurance Company of America, or Unum, is the single largest disability insurance company in the country.
A growing number of plaintiffs are filing disability benefits lawsuits against Unum, claiming that the insurance giant unfairly denied their claims to benefits that they qualify for under the terms of their insurance policies.
This Unum lawsuit over denied long-term disability benefits and others like it allege that Unum, as the largest disability insurance company in the country, has unfairly denied the disability insurance claims of plaintiffs who are qualified to receive such benefits.
Some lawsuits go further, alleging that the company purposely denied the claims of hundreds of thousands of workers with legitimate disabilities for no reason other to increase company profit.
Former employees of Unum have reported being instructed to purposely deny insurance to people with legitimate claims to disability benefits in order to fulfill the company’s quota.
Consumers who have exhausted all recourse through applications and appeals for disability benefits may turn to filing a lawsuit over denied disability benefits, hoping to reverse Unum’s denial.
If you or someone you know has been denied their proper disability benefits by Unum Life Insurance Company of America, you may be able to file a Unum lawsuit over denied disability benefits.
The Unum Denied Long-Term Disability Benefits Lawsuit is Case No. 3:17-cv-00013, in the State of Wisconsin Circuit Court for Dane County.
