Vial of CBD oilA number of different CBD products are under investigation due to concerns over their safety. These include Avid Hemp Gummies, Eco Sciences products, Diamond CBD vape additive, and Ceres Bounty items, among others.

Are Any CBD Items FDA-Approved?

Most people know that there are many products on the market, but only one CBD item has been approved by the federal agency. That drug goes by the brand name Epidiolex, and it’s used to treat two rare types of epilepsy.

What are the Known Risks with CBD?

Medical research about CBD’s impacts is still emerging. As of right now, the FDA shares that it is known that these items can cause liver injury, impact metabolism of other medications inside the body, and can increase the chances of drowsiness when combined with alcohol and other depressants.

Right now, research is reportedly ongoing to better understand the impact of CBD on special populations like the elderly and pregnant women, the possibilities of harm from cumulative exposure, and the influence it can have on animals. The side effects or potential dangers are still not fully known despite the fact that many people might be under the impression that CBD products are relatively safe to try in all their varieties.

What Are Doctors and Safety Experts Most Worried About?

One of the biggest concerns expressed by physicians and regulators to date has to do with if patients might forego other trusted treatments for serious medical conditions in favor of using CBD. This could block the patient from getting the help they need and putting off treatments that might be more effective or safer.

Since the only CBD product approved by the FDA is for the treatment of rare epilepsy disorders, patients should always be cautious when attempting to use CBD for any other condition.

Are There Any Marketing Issues with These Products?

Some of the side effects and risks presented above have to do with the underlying nature of CBD products themselves, but there are other harms associated with how companies market these CBD.

Consumers rely on labeling, claims, and advertising in order to make a decision about what to purchase and use. Federal laws outline what can and cannot be said about whether or not an FDA-unapproved product can be marketed as effective for treating a particular condition. It is currently illegal to market CBD as a dietary supplement, too.

There are also quality issues associated with CBD products given the broad variety of companies and formulations out there. The difference in potency and other ingredients can vary from one item to another. Current investigations are seeking to determine whether or not certain products have high levels of contaminants like heavy metals.

Since there are no firm regulations outside of excluding CBD from food products and not marketing it as a known cure for ailments, not a lot is known by consumers about CBD products. Consumers might think that all of them are created equal, but due to the surge in popularity there are many CBD products out there all with their own manufacturing process and marketing.
