If you have purchased Charlotte’s Web Canine Hemp Infused Balm, you may not have gotten what you paid for.
The CBD industry is still largely unregulated, meaning that manufacturers can say virtually anything they like about the actual CBD content of their products, at least until they are called out on it by consumers. A number of lawsuits filed over the past several months have claimed that many of these products contain far less CBD than is listed on the label — and some may contain none at all.
What Is CBD?
The letters CBD stand for cannabidiol, one of several phytocannibinoids (biochemical substances from the cannabis plant) that have been identified by scientists. Unlike tetrahdrycannibinol (THC), CBD is not psychoactive and does not get the user high. However, anecdotal evidence indicates that CBD can be an excellent treatment for pain, anxiety, stress and even control of epileptic seizures.
In addition to being the name of a company, Charlotte’s Web refers to a specific strain of cannabis that is low in THC but high in CBD. It was developed specifically for the treatment of seizures associated with Dravet’s Syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy. It was named for Charlotte Figi, a young girl with the condition who responded favorably to CBD treatments.
Do CBD Products Have FDA Approval?
Currently, the only CBD product approved by the FDA for sale in the U.S. is Epidiolex, a prescription medication manufactured and sold by GW Pharmaceuticals. While that was shown to control epileptic seizures, indications that it could cause liver damage surfaced during the FDA’s review. Beyond this, there has been little clinical research on the benefits, risks and medicinal properties of CBD, although many companies claim it helps a number of conditions.
What About Charlotte’s Web Canine Hemp Infused Balm?
This is a veterinary product manufactured by the same company that developed the strain of cannabis used to treat Charlotte Figi’s epilepsy. Charlotte’s Web Canine Hemp Infused Balm is a topical ointment, intended for the treatment of skin conditions in dogs (it is not meant for cats). Like humans, the nervous systems of dogs have what is known as endocannibinoid systems, which are nerve receptors that control functions such as eating, sleeping, relaxation, and cognition. The manufacturer also claims that the product is effective in enhancing dogs’ overall ability to recover from illnesses and injuries.
Are the Claims True?
Generally speaking, people who purchase and use CBD products from any manufacturer should operate on the principle of “caveat emptor”. As noted earlier, these products are unregulated and for the most part, untested under formal laboratory conditions. This means that, outside of a lab analysis, there is no way to know how much CBD a given product actually contains, or if the claims on the label are actually true.
The FDA has sent warning letters to 15 companies that manufacture and market CBD products over their product claims, most notably Curaleaf Holdings (Charlotte’s Web is not among those receiving a warning), and has generally taken the stance that CBD is not safe.
