According to some members of the online retailer JustFab, the site may continue to charge JustFab membership fees even after subscriptions are cancelled.

According to reports from consumers, online retailer JustFab may be auto-renewing membership subscriptions, resulting in surprise fees for shoppers.

What is JustFab?

JustFab is an online retailer that sells women’s clothing, shoes, bags, and accessories. The company was founded in 2010, and sells items to consumers in 12 countries. According to the company’s website, at least 95% of its leadership roles are held by women.

In addition to the JustFab brand, the company also sells items under the brands Shoedazzle and FabKids. These retailers work by offering a personalized shopping experience to consumers who sign up for a subscription.

How Does JustFab Work?

JustFab operates through a membership model. In addition to showing prices for non-members, the store encourages shoppers to opt-in to a VIP membership in order to gain access to special pricing. A pair of boots might cost more than $70 for a non-member, but as little as $10 for someone who opts into the VIP program. VIP members are charged $39.95 per month, and this fee can be applied towards the cost of future purchases. However, the membership fee can only be applied towards purchases that cost more than $39.95.

According to JustFab’s website, VIP members who want to take a month off from shopping can “skip the month” between the first and the fifth of each month. This will halt the $39.95 charge from being applied for that month.

In addition to receiving special pricing discounts, VIP members are sent suggestions for items they may want to purchase. These items are allegedly handpicked by JustFab’s personal stylists.

Although this may sound like a great deal to frequent online shoppers, some VIP members have reported being double charged these membership fees, being charged after cancelling their membership, or finding it extremely difficult to cancel their JustFab membership.

Multiple consumers have posted complaints on the Better Business Bureau’s website, claiming that they continue to be charged by JustFab, Shoedazzle, or FabKids despite canceling their membership.

How to Cancel a JustFab Membership

According to the JustFab site, there are two ways to cancel a VIP membership once you have signed up for it. Members may call the company over the phone and speak to a fashion consultant. This service is available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. The other way to cancel a membership is to use the site’s online chat function, which operates between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. EST.

Can You Get a JustFab Subscription Refund?

According to responses from JustFab on customer complaints posted on the Better Business Bureau’s site, many consumers have been offered subscription refunds. JustFab claims that it may take 5-7 days for refunds to appear in customer accounts. However, the company only refunds the $39.95 cost of membership fees. Additional fees including bank fees or taxes are not included in customer refunds.

woman submitting online complaintMany of the customers who have posted online complaints about JustFab claim that the company is a scam, and that the VIP membership program is simply a way for JustFab to make money via auto renewals.

Is JustFab a Ripoff?

Although JustFab is a real company that sells real products, some consumers believe that the structure of JustFab and other subscription based retailers like Fabletics is a ripoff. These companies operate by exchanging low prices for a recurring subscription fee. In many cases, consumers claim that they didn’t even know they had signed up for any kind of membership until they discovered several months of charges on their bank statements.

According to some shoppers, JustFab and other membership shopping services may be counting on consumers either not realizing they had signed up for a membership, or forgetting to cancel their membership before they are charged.

Have Any Lawsuits Been Filed Against JustFab?

At least one lawsuit has already been filed against JustFab regarding the company’s subscription fees and misleading advertising. In 2014, the company agreed to pay out nearly $2 million in order to settle claims that JustFab did not clearly and conspicuously disclose the terms of its VIP subscription service. The lawsuit was filed by the Santa Clara and Santa Cruz District Attorneys’ Offices.

In California, it is required that companies clearly notify customers when they are opting in to a subscription service, with no hidden fees. In fact, California auto renewal laws mandate a consumer’s affirmative consent before charging for the subscription. Although JustFab did not admit any guilt, the retailer agreed to pay $1.8 million to a class of plaintiffs who had been misled into signing up for the service.

If you have been charged for a JustFab membership after notifying the company that you wished to cancel your VIP membership, you may be eligible to speak with an experienced attorney about your legal options. In some cases, consumers who were charged these fees may be eligible to pursue reimbursement and additional compensation through a class action lawsuit against the retailer.
