Yogi tea bags recall overview:

  • Who: East West Tea Company issued a recall for nearly 55,000 packs of Yogi-branded tea bags.
  • Why: The company recalled the Yogi tea bags after pesticide residues were detected above action levels.
  • Where: The recalled Yogi tea bags were distributed nationwide.

East West Tea Company issued a recall in March for nearly 55,000 packs of Yogi branded tea bags over a pesticide contamination.

The Yogi tea bags pesticide recall involves 54,846 packs of Organic Yogi Echinacea Immune Support, Caffeine Herbal Supplement tea products with multiple lot codes and that were distributed nationwide, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The Yogi tea bags were voluntarily recalled after pesticide residues were detected “above action levels,” set by the FDA, according to the Yogi tea bags recall.

The recall involves more than 877,000 tea bags in total, with each pack of the recalled Yogi tea bags containing 16 tea bags and each box of the product containing four or six packs.

In a statement to Top Class Actions, Yogi says that while it does not use pesticides, buying only to organic specifications that do not allow conventional pesticide use, it exists within a complex supply chain network in which not everyone values organic practices.

“While the traces of pesticides found in the echinacea posed no risk of harm or illness, the product did not meet our high quality standards our consumers deserve,” the statement says. “Out of an abundance of caution, we immediately notified the [FDA] to initiate voluntary recall procedures.”

Yogi is following FDA protocols and working with retail partners on specific next steps, including removing potentially affected products from store shelves and having them returned for disposal, according to the statement. It is also working with all ingredient vendors to ensure full compliance with supplier expectations and testing requirements and engaged new partners to add additional testing capabilities across all of our products.

“Yogi is committed to making delicious and functional products made with the highest quality, organic and sustainably sourced ingredients,” the statement says. “We apologize for any concern the recall may have caused.”

Consumers with more questions about the recall can contact Yogi at  customerservice@yogiproducts.com or through its website. They can also return their tea to the original purchase location for a full refund.

In other pesticide-related news, a consumer filed a class action lawsuit against The Quaker Oats Company in March over claims it failed to disclose its products may be contaminated with the toxic chemical pesticide chlormequat chloride.

That class action lawsuit argues Quaker should have disclosed the alleged presence of the toxic pesticide in several of its products so consumers could make an informed choice before buying them.
