VW has announced a recall on more than 35,000 ID.4 SUVs, as the doors can open unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion.

The recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Authority (NHTSA) website May 3. The recall applies to 35,325 model year 2021-2022 ID.4 SUVs.

According to the recall, the affected vehicles may have been manufactured with door handles that allow water to enter the circuit board assembly, which can cause the doors to open unexpectedly when the vehicle is subject to high lateral forces at speeds below 9 mph/15 kmh, the company says.

“A vehicle door that opens unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion increases the risk of injury,” the recall states.

According to the recall, there have been 28 reports with alleged door openings received from June 2021 to April 2023. There was no mention of any injuries so far.

The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Dealers will fix the vehicles for free, recall states

Dealers will update the vehicle software and inspect the door handles as necessary, free of charge, the recall states.

In the meantime, if the recall condition is present in the vehicle, occupants may notice an audible clicking noise similar to the sound of a vehicle door being locked/unlocked.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 30, 2023.

Volkswagen and Audi agreed to pay $42 million as part of a 2021 airbag class action lawsuit settlement resolving allegations the companies’ cars use defective Takata airbags that could cause injuries or deaths.
