Abbyland Foods recalled more than 11,000 pounds of frozen turkey as the products are misbranded and contain an undeclared allergen.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) website published the recall April 21.
According to the notice, Abbyland Foods recalled approximately 11,800 pounds of frozen turkey meatballs labeled as turkey sausage patties due to misbranding and an undeclared allergen. The products contain soy, a known allergen, which is not declared on the product label, the recall states.
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products so far, the company says. Abbyland is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
Turkey meatballs discovered in patty box, sausage recall states
Abbyland shipped the products nationwide to hotels, restaurants and institutions.
A food service customer discovered the problem and notified the company of the labeling issue after they opened a box of frozen turkey sausage patties and discovered turkey meatballs instead, the company says.
“The meatballs contain soy protein concentrate, while the sausage patties label does not declare soy as an ingredient,” the turkey sausage recall states.
Abbyland produced the recalled frozen, fully cooked turkey meatball products labeled as turkey sausage patties March 3 and sold them in 5-lb. unlabeled bags in 10-pound labeled boxes of “Jennie-O FULLY COOKED TURKEY SAUSAGE PATTIES” with lot code 06223. The products have the establishment number “P-17764” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
Anyone concerned about illness should contact a healthcare provider. The products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase, the turkey sausage recall states.
In related sausage news, in February, Daniele International LLC recalled more than 26 tons of sausage products that were possibly contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.
