Toyota is recalling more than 4,000 vehicles—including 2022 gasoline-powered Rav4, Rav4 Hybrid, and Rav4 Prime plug-in hybrid vehicles, and 2023 Subaru Solterra and Toyota bZ4X vehicles—due to airbag and wheel detachment issues.

Toyota recalls 2022 Rav4 vehicles

Toyota is recalling 3,533 of its Rav4 vehicles as the front airbags may not deploy properly.

The Toyota Rav4 recall applies to certain 2022 Rav4, Rav4 Hybrid, and Rav4 Prime vehicles. The recall was announced July 21 on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.

According to the automaker, the front passenger seat in the affected vehicles may have been assembled with interference between internal parts. That can cause the Occupant Classification System sensor to incorrectly detect the occupant, Toyota said.

“Incorrect detection of an occupant may result in improper airbag deployment during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.”

As such, the vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal safety standards.

According to the recall, owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by Sept. 2. Dealers will inspect and repair the front passenger seat, as necessary, free of charge.

‘Urgent’ 2023 Subaru Solterra, Toyota bZ4X recall

Meanwhile, Toyota has put out an urgent safety recall for 661 of the 2023 Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra vehicles, which share a platform and powertrain.

The recall was issued June 23 on the NHTSA website.

According to the Subaru Solterra and Toyota bZ4X recall, the hub bolts on the wheels may loosen, causing a wheel to detach from the vehicle after low-mileage use.

“A wheel detaching from a moving vehicle can result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.”

Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until they are repaired, and Toyota says the remedy is currently under development.

Letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed June 27. A second letter will be sent once the remedy is available, the company said.

Toyota is not currently facing legal action over the recalls, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

In July, Toyota recalled about 75,400 Tacoma pickup trucks, model year 2022 to 2023, as the child seat anchors may fail in a crash.

The news comes as Toyota last month agreed to pay $20 million to resolve class action lawsuit claims its Prius vehicles were equipped with defective inverters that failed prematurely.
