- Where: The snow tire recall is active in the United States.
A tire company is recalling more than half a million snow tires as the tires don’t have enough traction to perform in all snow conditions.
The recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on Dec. 16. It applies to 541,632 Fortune Tormenta and Prinx Hicountry snow tires sold by Prinx Chengshan Tire North America Inc. as replacement tires. Dozens of makes of the tires are included in the recall, with a full list of the makes and models listed here.
According to the recall, the tires are labeled as snow tires, but do not have sufficient traction to perform in all snow weather conditions.
“Tires that do not provide sufficient traction in snow can increase the risk of a crash,” the recall says.
As such, the tires fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard.
Remedy for snow tires not yet developed, recall states
According to the snow tire recall, a remedy for the issue is currently under development. The recall does not contain instructions for owners in the meantime, however notification letters are expected to be mailed to tire owners by Feb. 1, 2025.
In June, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation consolidated 14 price-fixing class action lawsuits involving replacement tires, with consumers claiming tire companies Bridgestone, Goodyear, Continental Tire, Michelin North America and Pirelli Tire colluded to force customers to pay inflated prices for tires.
