Strauss Elite Kosher Confectionery Salmonella Recall Overview:
- Who: Strauss Israel of Israel is recalling a number of Elite-branded confectionery products.
- Why: The recalled products may potentially be contaminated with salmonella.
- Where: The Elite products have been distributed in the kosher market nationally.
More than 100 Elite-branded kosher chocolates, cakes, wafers, candies and more are being recalled nationwide due to potential salmonella contamination.
In a recall notice posted to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website Apr. 28, Israeli company Strauss Israel said it was recalling 101 different Elite-branded products, including chocolate, cakes, wafers, energy grain snacks, energy chocolate rice cakes, chewing gum and toffee candies.
The full list of recall products can be seen here and includes all product codes currently on the U.S. market.
The recalled products may potentially be contaminated with salmonella, the notice said.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.
No illnesses have been reported to date, the company said. Strauss Israel is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
Strauss Elite Products Sold in Kosher Market Nationally
The Elite products were distributed in the kosher market nationally, primarily in the Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, California and Florida, the recall says. The products were also sold directly to customers via Amazon.com, Fresh Direct, Passover.com and other retail sites.
The kosher confectioneries are being recalled as they were manufactured in a facility in which salmonella was detected in the production line. It was also detected in the liquid chocolate used for the production of the finished products, the recall states.
The recall has been massive overseas. Israel’s Health Ministry Director-General Nachman Ash announced that Strauss Group’s Elite factory in Nof Hagalil would be shut down for the next three months as the company investigates the salmonella contamination, according to The Times of Israel.
Healthy people infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses, such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
No other Strauss Israel or Elite products are affected, and the recall does not apply to any of the Elite coffee items, the recall says.
Consumers who bought the affected Elite-branded products should not consume them and can return them to the place of purchase for a full refund, the recall says.
In early April, Ferrero announced the recall of its Kinder Happy Moments Chocolate Assortment and Kinder Mix Chocolate Treats basket Apr. 7 on the FDA website. It said the products were being recalled because they were manufactured in a facility where salmonella typhimurium was detected.
