Soft drink recall overview:

  • Who: The Charles Boggini Co. recalled four types of soda.
  • Why: The sodas allegedly contain undeclared dangerous food dyes.
  • Where: The recall is active in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Arizona, Missouri, Illinois, Nevada and California.

The Charles Boggini Co. recalled four types of soda sold across nine states as the sodas allegedly contain undeclared and potentially dangerous food dyes.

The recall applies to certain batches of the Charles Boggini Co.’s Pink Lemonade, Cola Flavoring Base, Yellow Lemonade and Yellow Lemonade X sodas. The Charles Boggini Co. sells beverages to restaurants.

The company recalled almost 3,000 gallons of product across restaurants in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Arizona, Missouri, Illinois, Nevada and California.

Undeclared dyes could have adverse effects, FDA says

According to Food and Drug Administration enforcement reports, the sodas contain undeclared food dyes.

The Charles Boggini Co. recalled the Pink Lemonade product because it found it contains the undeclared dye Red No. 40 and the Yellow Lemonade because it contained the food dye Yellow 5. The dyes contain benzidine, a human and animal carcinogen that is only permitted in low, presumably-safe levels in dyes, according to the recall notice.

Red 40 food dye has been linked to causing allergies, migraines and ADHD in children, with Yellow 5 found to potentially lead to allergic reactions in people with asthma or people with an aspirin intolerance, the recall says. Companies must declare if they use these dyes in their products.

The company recalled the Cola Flavoring because of undeclared sulfites, which are commonly used to preserve foods, according to the recall notice. However, some people experience sensitivity to sulfites, including allergic skin reactions, respiratory issues and digestive issues.

The recalls included 28 gallons of Pink Lemonade, more than 2,700 gallons of the Cola Flavoring base and 112 gallons of the Yellow Lemonade products.

The recall applies to the following lot/unit numbers:

  • Charles Boggini Pink Lemonade—1-017
  • Charles Boggini Cola Flavoring Base—9-330, 9-348, 1-013, 1-036, 1-097
  • Charles Boggini Yellow Lemonade—1-065
  • Charles Boggini Yellow Lemonade X—1-015

The Charles Boggini Co. voluntarily recalled the drinks at the end of March, but the FDA did not classify the health hazard of the drinks until June 3.

Earlier this month, Natural Waters of Viti Ltd. issued a recall for nearly 79,000 cases of Fiji water after testing revealed a contamination of manganese and three bacterial genera.

  1. Amanda says:

I had pink lemonade from Kennywood, Pennsylvania, when leaving the park, I drank a good bit of it at home before realizing my throat was very itchy. then at night I had an asthma attack and hives all over, I took my inhaler and two benedryl pills. this is probably why because I couldn’t think of anything else other than either a contaminated system or out door allegeries….my husband had his own cup of iced tea and the kids had water. we all ate the same foods.
