Snapchill coffee recall overview:

  • Who: Snapchill has recalled all of its canned coffee products.
  • Why: The company’s current manufacturing process can lead to the growth and production of a deadly toxin.
  • Where: The Snapchill coffee recall is active in the United States.

A coffee production company has recalled hundreds of canned coffee products sold under dozens of brands nationwide, as the products are made in a way that can lead to the growth of a deadly toxin.

The recall was published to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration website on June 20. It applies to Snapchill products distributed nationwide through various coffee roasters and retail locations, as well as through direct online purchase from Snapchill. A full list of recalled products and brands can be accessed here.

According to the recall, the current production process for the products could lead to the growth and production of the deadly toxin “botulinum”, in low acid canned foods. Botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, can cause general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing, the recall states.

No illnesses have been reported so far, and Snapchill is not aware of any instances in which the products actually contained botulinum toxin, it said.

Snapchill is not currently facing legal action, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they can sometimes result in lawsuits.

Snapchill offers refund

The production problem was identified when the FDA notified Snapchill that the “low acid canned foods process” for manufacturing the products was not filed with the agency, as is required by regulation. Snapchill is working on filing the required notification with the FDA, it said.

The products are sold under a range of roaster and brand names, in a variety of metal can sizes ranging from 7 oz to 12 oz. Consumers should either destroy the products or return the product to Snapchill or the place of purchase for a refund, the recall states.

Snapchill will offer full refunds for any of the products, with appropriate proof of purchase.

Meanwhile, the Coffee Bean Tea & Leaf has been hit with a class action lawsuit alleging it levies an unlawful surcharge to customers who request to substitute milk for a non-dairy alternative.

The plaintiffs in that lawsuit claim Coffee Bean is discriminating against people with milk allergies or who suffer from lactose intolerance by charging an extra at least an 80-cent surcharge to substitute milk for a non-dairy alternative.
