Sandwiches listeria recall overview:

  • Who: Classic Delight has recalled a number of wrapped sandwiches.
  • Why: The sandwiches might be contaminated with listeria.
  • Where: The sandwich recall is active in Arkansas, California, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas

Ohio company Classic Delight has recalled a number of sandwiches distributed across seven states due to concerns about possible listeria contamination.

The recall was announced on the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website on June 10.

It applies to a limited number of individually wrapped sandwiches sold under the Classic Delight, Wakefield and Nutrisystem brands, including Turkey Ham and Cheese Subs and Sausage Egg and Cheese Muffins. The full list of recalled items can be viewed here.

According to the recall, the sandwiches could be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,” the sandwiches listeria recall says.

So far, there have been no reports of illness in relation to the products. The company is not currently facing a lawsuit, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they can sometimes result in legal action.

Consumers should throw out recalled sandwiches, or return for refund

The recall was set in motion after some sandwich samples tested positive for the bacteria, the recall says. All production of the sandwiches has been paused while the FDA and the company continue to investigate the source of the problem, it says.

The recalled sandwiches were shipped to distributors in Arkansas, California, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas, and may have ended up in food service distribution, convenience stores and vending machines. The sandwiches were produced between May 11, 2023, and June 6, 2024.

Consumers who bought the recalled sandwiches should throw them out or return them for a full refund.

Last month, Hormel Foods announced it is recalling two specific lots of Planters nuts after the nuts were distributed to Publix and Dollar Tree in a total of five states.
