Water beads recall overview:

  • Who: Buffalo Games recalled 52,000 of its Chuckle and Roar Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kits sold at Target.
  • Why: The water beads grow in size if ingested and can cause choking, ingestion or intestinal obstruction issues that led to at least one death and a serious injury.
  • Where: The water beads recall is effective across the United States.

Buffalo Games issued a recall for 52,000 of its Chuckle and Roar Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kits sold at Target after the products reportedly led to the death of a 10-month-old in Wisconsin.

The Target recall comes because, if ingested, the water beads expand and can obstruct the air passage or lead to an intestinal blockage or a choking hazard, the recall states.

The Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kit includes two ounces of “jumbo” water beads and six ounces of “regular” water beads, according to the recall notice. Along with a clear container and lid, there are five small toy fish, a scissor scoop, tweezers, a scoop with a handle, 10 activity cards and instructions. The UPC on the back is 079346627035.

Second child swallowed beads and required intestinal surgery, water beads recall says

Buffalo Games says it received two reports of serious injury related to the recall, including the water beads death in July 2023 and a 9-month-old in Maine who ingested the beads, which caused an intestinal obstruction and required surgery for removal. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Buffalo Games asks consumers to stop using the water beads immediately and take them away from children, teh recall says. Buffalo Games will provide a full refund and prepaid packaging to return the product, or consumers can return the product to a Target store.

Consumers can reach Buffalo Games at (800) 637-0732 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET Monday to Friday, via email at beadrecall@buffalogames.com or online at chuckleandroar.com/recall.

In addition to the water beads, Target also recently recalled nearly 5 million candles as they pose a laceration and burn hazard.
