- Where: The affected cars were sold in the United States.
Tesla is recalling 7,600 select MY 2021 Model S and Model X vehicles due to an airbag issue.
In a safety recall report filed Nov. 9 with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Tesla said testing had revealed about one percent of the listed models had airbag issues that could cause them to tear when deployed.
“A tear in the airbag cushion fabric may decrease airbag performance during deployment, which may increase the risk of injury during a collision,” the report says.
The recall noted that drivers would not have any advance warning of the flaw.
Tesla Airbag Can Tear Upon Deployment Warns Recall Notice
The issue was caused by new production at one of the supplier’s manufacturing locations, which made the bags in a slightly different way in which the airbag can catch the cover door during deployment, causing the tear in the airbag cushion fabric.
As a precautionary measure, Tesla will replace the driver airbag on all affected vehicles.
All Tesla stores and service centers should have been notified by Nov. 10. Car owners will be notified by Jan. 7, 2022, by mail.
This is the most recent of a string of Tesla recalls. In November, the company recalled the software in almost 12,000 Tesla Model S, X, 3 and Y vehicles after discovering it can force cars to wrongly slam on the emergency brakes, putting passengers at risk of being rear-ended.
The recall comes after Volvo was forced to recall more than 460,000 older-model vehicles due to a fault that could see airbags explode, sending hot shrapnel into the cabin. At least one death had been caused by Volvo’s faulty airbags.
