Some Sportsman’s Pride, Sprout Sporting, Intimidator, and FRM Gold Select dog foods are facing a voluntary recall due to risks the products could be contaminated with salmonella.

So far, the products – produced by Sunshine Mills, Inc. – have not caused any illnesses, injuries, or complaints, the recall notice states.

The recall was announced after a 5 pound sample of Sprout Sporting Dog Food tested positive for salmonella during routine surveillance by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.

The recall only affects some lots of the selected dog foods, including:

  • 40 lb. bags of Sportsman’s Pride Professional Formula 30/20 Dog Food, best before 10/7/21, lot: TI1 07/Oct/2020, UPC code: 7015510184, sold in MS, FL, TN, LA, VA, NC, TX;

The recall notice says that salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Symptoms in humans include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever, and can rarely include more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.

Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers, the notice states.

Pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.

“Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed a recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian,” the notice says.

Pet owners are being urged to discontinue using the products and return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Consumers may contact Sunshine Mills, Inc. customer service at (800) 705-2111 from 7a.m. to 4p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday, or by email for additional information.

It is not rare for a pet food product to be recalled over salmonella fears. Recently, cat food producer Natural Balance had to issue a nationwide recall of its Natural Balance L.I.D. Green Pea & Chicken Dry Cat Formula after routine testing revealed salmonella contamination.
