Chrysler has issued a new recall for more than 132,000 model year 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles as they can catch fire even when the car is off.
The recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) May 11. It applies to 132,099 vehicles previously repaired during a 2015 recall.
According to the Jeep recall, an electrical short in the power liftgate module may lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off.
The recall comes after the FCA US Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance organization opened an investigation as a result of an increasing trend in cargo compartment fires in 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokee vehicles Jan. 5, 2022, the company said.
As of April 27, 2023, FCA US identified 50 customer assistance records, 23 warranty claims and 21 field reports potentially related to the issue for all markets.
FCA US said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue so far. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Park away from structures and other vehicles
Owners should park their vehicles outside and away from structures and other vehicles until the recall has been remedied, the company said.
The remedy for the issue is still under development, it said.
“FCA US will conduct a voluntary safety recall on all affected vehicles,” the company said. “FCA US has a longstanding policy and practice of reimbursing owners who have incurred the cost of repairing a problem that subsequently becomes the subject of a field action.”
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 30, 2023.
A number of Jeep and Dodge Ram vehicles were built with fuel pumps that can fail early, causing safety risks, an April class action lawsuit alleges.

I have a 2014 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. It has had eight recalls so far (I know. It’s a Jeep thing). The current one is the liftgate refusing to open due to a short. In fact, it won’t even unlock. The dealer said they can’t even unlock it. I have been unable to use the cargo compartment of my car for eight months. I can’t park in my garage for fear of fire. I can’t access my spare if I have a flat. I have been unable to take it on camping trips – which I usually do bi-monthly. It’s infuriating that I am unable to use my car for anything other than short trips around town. And it’s infuriating that FCA doesn’t seem to care about it’s customers. I’m looking forward to a class action lawsuit.
Own a 2015
I have a 2015 jeep grand Cherokee Limited, I have around 120,000 miles on it. I bought it used thinking there was nothing wrong with it, after I got all these recalls. I’m not safe driving my daughter or family in my vehicle, respectfully, I believe jeep needs to give me what I paid for the vehicle so I can purchase a safer vehicle for my family. Not only does the jeep have a problem shifting (witch almost caused a car accident not just one time but several) but I was left stranded because behind the oil cooler the coolant hose bursted, which is a known problem and now this!?!?
My 2015 Jeep Latitude caught on fire in the middle of the night with the ignition off in the cargo area but FCA is playing stupid about it. I love the “no injuries reported”; they have lied every which way about these fires.
My 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude caught fire on August 11, 2023 after I had pulled into my garage. The fire started behind the front bumper. I did not have an automatic lift gate. Investigators don’t know why. Therefore Stellantis says they’re not to blame.
We received the recall notice and now my wife is afraid to go anywhere in the Jeep. What am I supposed to do for a vehicle?
Me and my mother in law both owe a 2015 jeep cherokee and need to know what we need to do to take care of the problem?
I took my 2014 Jeep Cherokee Latitude in for an oil change and one week later my back hatch wouldn’t latched closed. Overnight it drained my battery and when I went to start my car it was dead. Luckily I could jump the battery and knew of a place that figured out the fuse had shorted which caused the dead battery. One week later this recall came out. I’m Not sure if I had the 2015 recall or not but I still qualify for this one.
My 2015 Jeep Cherokee Limited, has more problems than any vehicle I’ve ever owned! It has so many electrical problems it’s annoying! It won’t move when I hit the gas, the shifting doesn’t always work, oil problems and so on! Now I know why I got such a get deal on it! Ughh makes me so mad cause I worked so hard and was so proud of being able to have a vehicle so nice and reliable! I sure was fooled!
I have NOT received a recall for fire hazard but I did receive a recall last week for my catalytic converter. I have a 2015 Jeep Cherokee Sport.
