Stellantis North America is recalling certain Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid electric vehicles due to a risk they can catch fire while parked or driving.
The Jeep fire recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on Sept. 27. It applies to 154,032 model year 2020-2024 Jeep Wrangler and 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee PHEVs.
Some of the vehicles may have been built with a battery pack containing cells that are susceptible to separator damage, the Jeep recall says. This issue could cause the high voltage batteries in these vehicles to fail internally, which could in turn cause a vehicle fire while parked or driving.
An investigation was initiated in June after multiple reports of fires in Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Cherokee PHEVs originating in the high voltage batteries.
“A vehicle fire can result in increased risk of occupant injury and/or injury to persons outside the vehicle, as well as property damage,” the Jeep recall says.
Park away from structures, Jeep recall advises
Owners of Wrangler and Cherokee PHEVs are advised to park outside and away from structures, and not to recharge their vehicles until they are repaired, as depleted batteries reduce the risk, the recall says.
Dealers will update the high voltage battery pack software and replace the battery pack assembly, if necessary, free of charge, the automaker said. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Oct. 17.
Last month, Stellantis recalled more than 30,000 model year 2020-2024 Jeep Gladiator and model year 2018-2024 Jeep Wrangler vehicles over concerns their instrument panels can fail.
