Pfizer recall overview:

  • Who: Pfizer recalled about 4.2 million Nurtec ODT prescription drugs.
  • Why: The products do not meet the child-resistant packaging requirement.
  • Where: The Pfizer recall is active in the United States.

Pfizer recalled about 4.2 million Nurtec ODT prescription drugs as the products do not meet the child-resistant packaging requirement, posing a risk of poisoning children.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website published the recall March 16. The recall applies to Nurtec® ODT (rimegepant) orally disintegrating tablets in a 75 mg eight-unit dose blister pack with all expiration dates through 6/2026.

According to the Pfizer recall, the prescription drugs must be in child-resistant packaging as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act.

However, the packaging of the products is not child-resistant, posing a risk of poisoning if the contents are swallowed by young children.

No injuries have been reported so far, the company says. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Immediately secure product away from children, Pfizer recall states

Consumers should immediately secure the recalled product out of the sight and reach of children and contact Pfizer for a free child-resistant pouch to store the product, the recall states. Once the product is secured, consumers can continue to use it as directed.

Pfizer sold the product at pharmacies nationwide as a prescribed medicine from Dec. 2021 through March 2023. The prices of the product varied based on health insurance terms and other factors.

Last year, Pfizer recalled 11 lots of hypertension medications distributed by itself and by the company Greenstone, as it contains too much of the carcinogenic chemical compound nitrosamine.
