Mazda is recalling more than 77,000 model year 2016-2023 MX-5 Miata vehicles over concerns they were equipped with airbags that may deploy with more force than expected during a minor crash or collision.
The automaker said the issue may increase the risk of airbag-induced injuries in the event a vehicle passenger is not using a seat belt.
There have been no reports of accidents or injuries in connection with the recall, according to the Mazda airbag recall.
Mazda said it expects to have mailed out all recall notification letters to affected vehicle owners on or before Nov. 17, 2024.
Dealers to reprogram airbag sensor control module as part of Mazda recall fix
The automaker said it will remedy the issue by having its dealers reprogram the Sophisticated Air Bag Sensor (SAS) control module on the recalled Mazda Miata vehicles.
“Vehicles not included in the recall have the improved SAS control module software,” the Mazda airbag recall says.
Individuals with more questions about the recall can check Mazda’s website and/or the website for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Mazda in August over claims the automaker knowingly sold certain vehicles containing a dangerous engine defect that causes the engine to leak coolant, leading to “catastrophic engine failure.”
