Hyundai Motor America and Kia America have initiated a recall for more than 3 million vehicles combined over concerns they contain a defect that could cause them to experience a fire in their engine compartment.ย
The Kia recall involves various models of more than 1.7 million Kia Borrego, Cadenza, Forte, Forte Koup, K900, Optima, Optima Hybrid, Rio, Sorento, Soul, Sportage, and Rondo vehicles.ย
Kia said it is concerned the vehicles could suffer a short circuit in the area of their Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit, which could over time result in an excessive current that would increase the risk of an engine compartment fire.ย
The automaker said the exact cause of the defect remains unknown. Vehicle owners should be on the lookout for an illumination of their MIL, ABS warning light, a burning/melting smell, or smoke coming from their engine compartment, according to the recall.ย
Vehicle owners will be instructed, as a precautionary measure, to park the recalled Kia vehicles outside and away from structures until a remedy recall is performed.ย
Hyundai recalls more than 1.6 million vehicles on account of fire risk concerns
The Hyundai recall involves various models of more than 1.6 million Hyundai Accent, Azera, Elantra, Elantra Coupe, Equus, Genesis Coupe, Santa Fe, Santa Fe Sport, Tucson, Tucson Fuel Cell, Sonata Hybrid, Veloster, and Veracruz vehicles.ย
Hyundai said it is concerned the recalled vehicles were equipped with Anti-Lock Brake System modules that could leak brake fluid internally, eventually causing an electrical short that could increase the risk of an engine compartment fire.ย
Owners of the recalled vehicles can continue to drive them, but are being advised to park them outside and away from structures until a remedy is completed, according to the Hyundai recall.ย
Hyundai said vehicle owners and dealers will both be notified about the recall by Nov. 21, 2023.
Hyundai recalled nearly 38,000 of its model year 2021-2023 Hyundai Elantra hybrid electric vehicles earlier this month over concerns a software defect could cause them to experience a slow and unintended acceleration after their brake pedal is released.ย ย
