Hyundai, Kia recall overview:

  • Who: Hyundai Motor America and Kia America recalled a combined more than 3 million vehicles over concerns they could experience a fire in their engine compartment.
  • Why: Hyundai is concerned a fire could occur as a result of brake fluid leaking internally in their Anti-Lock Brake System modules. Kia is worried their vehicles could catch fire as a result of a short circuit in their Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit.
  • Where: Nationwide.

Hyundai Motor America and Kia America have initiated a recall for more than 3 million vehicles combined over concerns they contain a defect that could cause them to experience a fire in their engine compartment.

The Kia recall involves various models of more than 1.7 million Kia Borrego, Cadenza, Forte, Forte Koup, K900, Optima, Optima Hybrid, Rio, Sorento, Soul, Sportage, and Rondo vehicles.

Kia said it is concerned the vehicles could suffer a short circuit in the area of their Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit, which could over time result in an excessive current that would increase the risk of an engine compartment fire.

The automaker said the exact cause of the defect remains unknown. Vehicle owners should be on the lookout for an illumination of their MIL, ABS warning light, a burning/melting smell, or smoke coming from their engine compartment, according to the recall.

Vehicle owners will be instructed, as a precautionary measure, to park the recalled Kia vehicles outside and away from structures until a remedy recall is performed.

Hyundai recalls more than 1.6 million vehicles on account of fire risk concerns

The Hyundai recall involves various models of more than 1.6 million Hyundai Accent, Azera, Elantra, Elantra Coupe, Equus, Genesis Coupe, Santa Fe, Santa Fe Sport, Tucson, Tucson Fuel Cell, Sonata Hybrid, Veloster, and Veracruz vehicles.

Hyundai said it is concerned the recalled vehicles were equipped with Anti-Lock Brake System modules that could leak brake fluid internally, eventually causing an electrical short that could increase the risk of an engine compartment fire.

Owners of the recalled vehicles can continue to drive them, but are being advised to park them outside and away from structures until a remedy is completed, according to the Hyundai recall.

Hyundai said vehicle owners and dealers will both be notified about the recall by Nov. 21, 2023.

Hyundai recalled nearly 38,000 of its model year 2021-2023 Hyundai Elantra hybrid electric vehicles earlier this month over concerns a software defect could cause them to experience a slow and unintended acceleration after their brake pedal is released.

Before 80,000 miles my 2017 Hyundai Tucson turned off while driving up a hill. The catalytic converter was charged.I have to put oil every few weeks.I believe the car is burning oil and the light has never turned on. The car always sounds like it’s fluttering.

Hello everyone. First of all. GOD BLESS US ALL. AMEN ❤ 🙏. I HAVE A 2014 KIA OPTIMA EX. BOB KING KIA IN WINSTON SALEM JUST REPLACED MY ENGINE WITH A NEW ONE AND THEY HAD MY VEHICLE FROM AUGUST 18TH TIL SEPTEMBER 30TH 2023. THEY RECOMMENDED I PAY $179 FOR A BREAK FLUID FLUSH WHEN THEY JUST HAD MY CAR. I KNEW I COULD HAVE MY SON N LAW THAT WORKS ON ALL KINDS OF VEHICLES DO THE BREAK FLUID FLUSH ALOT CHEAPER THAN THAT. NOW THIERS A RECALL ON THE BREAK FLUID SYSTEM. WHY IN THE WORLD DID THEY NOT JUST FIX THIS ISSUE WHEN THEY HAD IT? NOW WHO KNOWS WHEN I’M GONNA BE ABLE TO GET AN APPOINTMENT WITH KIA TO GET THIS FIXED. AND HOW LONG THEY’RE GOING TO HAVE IT AT THIER REPAIR CENTER. I WAS WITHOUT A VEHICLE FOR OVER A MONTH AUGUST THRU SEPTEMBER. WITH NO OFFER OF A CAR I COULD USE TIL MINE WAS FIXED. NOW I HAVE TO BE WITHOUT A VEHICLE AGAIN . ALL THESE RECALLS ARE REDICULOUS. I JUST BOUGHT THIS CAR IN JANUARY. I HAVEN’T OWNED A CAR SINCE 2005. I THOUGHT I GOT AN AMAZING DEAL ON THIS VEHICLE. AND I THANK GOD I HAD THE FINANCES TO AFFORD A VEHICLE THIS NICE. I JUST WISH NOW I WOULD OF PURCHASED SOMETHING THAT DOESN’T HAVE A MAJOR RECALL EVERY OTHER MONTH OR SO. THEY SHOULD JUST REFUND EVERYONE THE MONEY WE PAID FOR THESE VEHICLES. KIA MAY COME OUT CHEAPER THEMSELVES INSTEAD OF REPLACING NEW ENGINES AND OTHER MAJOR PARTS ON MILLIONS OF VEHICLES. ANYWAY. GOD BLESS US ALL AMEN AMEN AMEN AMEN AMEN AMEN AMEN ❤ 🙏 😊 🙌 👏 ☺ ❤

I’m so tired of the constant recalls with Hyundai and Kia. The NHTSA failed owners of these vehicles. NHTSA should have forced hyundai and Kia to do a buyback program on these vehicles for failure to protect from engine fire to the TikTok challenge on how many of these vehicles can be stolen in a day. Shame on you NHTSA for not holding these companies accountable. Hyundai and kia for all your failures to protect the customers. Diminish vehicle value, insurance companies refusing to insure the cars, side stepping using cheap parts. Never again will I buy a Hyundai or Kia.

I have a 2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring station wagon. Is the recall for this vehicle also? I didn’t see anything about the Touring, even though it is an Elantra. Thank you for any assistance, that can be given.
