Hyundai, Kia recall overview:

  • Who: Hyundai Motor America and Kia America recalled a combined more than 3 million vehicles over concerns they could experience a fire in their engine compartment.
  • Why: Hyundai is concerned a fire could occur as a result of brake fluid leaking internally in their Anti-Lock Brake System modules. Kia is worried their vehicles could catch fire as a result of a short circuit in their Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit.
  • Where: Nationwide.

Hyundai Motor America and Kia America have initiated a recall for more than 3 million vehicles combined over concerns they contain a defect that could cause them to experience a fire in their engine compartment.

The Kia recall involves various models of more than 1.7 million Kia Borrego, Cadenza, Forte, Forte Koup, K900, Optima, Optima Hybrid, Rio, Sorento, Soul, Sportage, and Rondo vehicles.

Kia said it is concerned the vehicles could suffer a short circuit in the area of their Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit, which could over time result in an excessive current that would increase the risk of an engine compartment fire.

The automaker said the exact cause of the defect remains unknown. Vehicle owners should be on the lookout for an illumination of their MIL, ABS warning light, a burning/melting smell, or smoke coming from their engine compartment, according to the recall.

Vehicle owners will be instructed, as a precautionary measure, to park the recalled Kia vehicles outside and away from structures until a remedy recall is performed.

Hyundai recalls more than 1.6 million vehicles on account of fire risk concerns

The Hyundai recall involves various models of more than 1.6 million Hyundai Accent, Azera, Elantra, Elantra Coupe, Equus, Genesis Coupe, Santa Fe, Santa Fe Sport, Tucson, Tucson Fuel Cell, Sonata Hybrid, Veloster, and Veracruz vehicles.

Hyundai said it is concerned the recalled vehicles were equipped with Anti-Lock Brake System modules that could leak brake fluid internally, eventually causing an electrical short that could increase the risk of an engine compartment fire.

Owners of the recalled vehicles can continue to drive them, but are being advised to park them outside and away from structures until a remedy is completed, according to the Hyundai recall.

Hyundai said vehicle owners and dealers will both be notified about the recall by Nov. 21, 2023.

Hyundai recalled nearly 38,000 of its model year 2021-2023 Hyundai Elantra hybrid electric vehicles earlier this month over concerns a software defect could cause them to experience a slow and unintended acceleration after their brake pedal is released.

Hyundai has recalled over 60 vehicles due to engine problems. The problems are related to specific engines, including: Theta II, Nu GDI, Gamma GDI.
Hyundai says that many of the engine problems are due to a faulty connecting rod bearing. Other symptoms of engine problems include:
      Knocking or tapping sounds
      Internal damage to the engine
      Increased oil and/or fuel consumption
Sudden loss of power (including while driving) and engine failure
The emission of smoke from the engine compartment
      In some cases, fire
Hyundai says that manufacturing problems could have left metallic debris around the engine crankshaft, causing problems with oil flow. The pieces of metal could interfere with the oil flow through the connecting rod bearings and damage the connecting rod.

Was the recall also including 2015 Kia Soul which I bought new. My car has had problems with check engine light coming on and flashing, knocking sounds, sudden loss of power, problems starting. They just say the car has been reset and it’s running fine and give it back with no charge but hundreds of $$$ of recommended additional maintenance each time. I’ve always had my servicing at Kia at the scheduled times, and ask them why I’m getting additional recommended work every time. I have 70,150 on the car now and take good car of my car. LMK. TY.

  3. Beth says:

Another day, another stop by the mechanic for a flashing oil light. I need more information regarding the oil situation with the Hyundai Sonata line from 2018. This is not normal.

I have a 2019 Kia Optima S . Is my vehicle on recall? Also car gets broke into with damages to later find out about a Kia boy challenge as well. And to stop that off been waiting on custom parts for months . This s not a good look and very disappointed.

  5. Vicki says:

I have a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. I’m irritated. I had my car stolen(Kia boys challenge or whatever it’s called) and had to pay $3500 for damages. I wasn’t even in my home state. I was visiting family. I drive my car from NC to CA. I was supposed to leave in one week when my car got stolen. So many problems happened because of this issue. Now they’re saying to park them away from the house…so that it can get stolen again?! We shouldn’t have to be paying for their mistakes.

  6. Crystal Lopez Munoz says:

Want to know if 2022 Kia Forte is part of this recall? Please get back to me on this matter.

  7. EV says:

Just bought my 2023 Tuscon in June , a month later it is being recalled. How frustrating is that. So far no fix just “don’t park too close to your house”.

  8. Winnie Clark says:

I have a 2016 Kia Forte and need to know if it is one of the recall vehicles

    1. Tim says:

    1. Debra Berault says:

I own a 2013 Hyundai Elantra that i purchased second hand it was a year old, with 20,000 miles. It has been nothing but trouble since the day i hit it , and NOW it needs a new motor. However, it is not included in any of the recalls so it sits!!! I paid $16,000 for a 1yr old car that I was only able to drive for 6yrs (I do not have the funds to replace the motor). Niw looking at getting a new car and that very car they want 12 to 14,000 for. Now this, who knows if my car would be in this but it teally wouldn’t matter because i cannot drive it without a motor anyway!!!! Frustrated and disappointed as hell is the way i feel to say the absolute least!!!! As I Lyft everywhere i go you can imagine how much that has cost me

  10. Shannon Rosier says:

2014 Hyundai Accent gls 4 door Sedan. Yes, my car has a new engine, that Hyundai, reimbursed me for and gave me the title to the car. However, I have had crazy things like the lights, going haywire. The brake light on mine just melted together the bulb to the connector. So yeah, here’s another round of fire hazard. I heard they’re just replacing a fuse in the affected vehicles. However, the people aren’t happy that the real source isn’t going to happen. Replacing a fuse? Ok what about the brake fluid I do see leaking. Well, that’s it, I want another car. I purchased this one brand new.
