Hyundai, Kia recall overview:ย

  • Who: Hyundai Motor America and Kia America recalled a combined more than 3 million vehicles over concerns they could experience a fire in their engine compartment.ย
  • Why: Hyundai is concerned a fire could occur as a result of brake fluid leaking internally in their Anti-Lock Brake System modules. Kia is worried their vehicles could catch fire as a result of a short circuit in their Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit.ย
  • Where: Nationwide.ย

Hyundai Motor America and Kia America have initiated a recall for more than 3 million vehicles combined over concerns they contain a defect that could cause them to experience a fire in their engine compartment.ย

The Kia recall involves various models of more than 1.7 million Kia Borrego, Cadenza, Forte, Forte Koup, K900, Optima, Optima Hybrid, Rio, Sorento, Soul, Sportage, and Rondo vehicles.ย

Kia said it is concerned the vehicles could suffer a short circuit in the area of their Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit, which could over time result in an excessive current that would increase the risk of an engine compartment fire.ย

The automaker said the exact cause of the defect remains unknown. Vehicle owners should be on the lookout for an illumination of their MIL, ABS warning light, a burning/melting smell, or smoke coming from their engine compartment, according to the recall.ย

Vehicle owners will be instructed, as a precautionary measure, to park the recalled Kia vehicles outside and away from structures until a remedy recall is performed.ย

Hyundai recalls more than 1.6 million vehicles on account of fire risk concerns

The Hyundai recall involves various models of more than 1.6 million Hyundai Accent, Azera, Elantra, Elantra Coupe, Equus, Genesis Coupe, Santa Fe, Santa Fe Sport, Tucson, Tucson Fuel Cell, Sonata Hybrid, Veloster, and Veracruz vehicles.ย

Hyundai said it is concerned the recalled vehicles were equipped with Anti-Lock Brake System modules that could leak brake fluid internally, eventually causing an electrical short that could increase the risk of an engine compartment fire.ย

Owners of the recalled vehicles can continue to drive them, but are being advised to park them outside and away from structures until a remedy is completed, according to the Hyundai recall.ย

Hyundai said vehicle owners and dealers will both be notified about the recall by Nov. 21, 2023.

Hyundai recalled nearly 38,000 of its model year 2021-2023 Hyundai Elantra hybrid electric vehicles earlier this month over concerns a software defect could cause them to experience a slow and unintended acceleration after their brake pedal is released.ย ย

I had a 2013 Optima SLX that we bought new and it caught on fire in 2016 in Texas. Luckily I had gap insurance and they covered the difference. USAA even tried going after them with no luck. I want my payments back

These cars are known to be โ€œdisposableโ€. My brother was a mechanic and told me decades ago never to buy one.

This is my 2nd Hyundai Sonata, I bought a 2015 brand new in 2015 & a lady totaled it Feb 2020. I loved my car so much I drove 6 hrs just to get another one, as the trim I had & wanted again wasnโ€™t available anywhere near me. This time I bought a 2018 Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.0 T (2 yrs old) & I sure donโ€™t remember any of my other cars over the years having soooo many recalls. You know they say oh its free parts & labor, but what about our time & taking off work & atleast for me, Iโ€™ve had them keep my car as long as 7-11 days on these recalls. Another thing they โ€˜โ€Claimโ€ is loaner cars which is a joke ๐Ÿ™„ In the 8 yrs Iโ€™ve been a loyal Hyundai driver I believe 1 time there was a loaner available. In my case Thank God I Paid for that Ridiculous โ€œExtraโ€ warranty for $3,300 but after they financed it in, it costed me around 7k+ with dealership increasing my interest rate 1% & dragging my 48 mth loan to 61 mths โ€“ point being Iโ€™ve never even used it EXCEPT for rental car coverage for these many many recalls, even so I still have to pay 20/day for car ins to cover rental. Long story short as much as I Love Hyundai, Iโ€™m done. Iโ€™ll be looking for a totally new car & certainly not Hyundaiโ€ฆ

I have a 2013 hyduai sonata, 133,000 miles. I was told by a mechanic that I have a small leak and will need it fixed soon, car repairs are very expensive so it takes time. Hopefully it will last me until I can get it fixed but im parking away from other cars, this recall scares me.
