Hyundai, Kia recall overview:

  • Who: Hyundai Motor America and Kia America recalled a combined more than 3 million vehicles over concerns they could experience a fire in their engine compartment.
  • Why: Hyundai is concerned a fire could occur as a result of brake fluid leaking internally in their Anti-Lock Brake System modules. Kia is worried their vehicles could catch fire as a result of a short circuit in their Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit.
  • Where: Nationwide.

Hyundai Motor America and Kia America have initiated a recall for more than 3 million vehicles combined over concerns they contain a defect that could cause them to experience a fire in their engine compartment.

The Kia recall involves various models of more than 1.7 million Kia Borrego, Cadenza, Forte, Forte Koup, K900, Optima, Optima Hybrid, Rio, Sorento, Soul, Sportage, and Rondo vehicles.

Kia said it is concerned the vehicles could suffer a short circuit in the area of their Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit, which could over time result in an excessive current that would increase the risk of an engine compartment fire.

The automaker said the exact cause of the defect remains unknown. Vehicle owners should be on the lookout for an illumination of their MIL, ABS warning light, a burning/melting smell, or smoke coming from their engine compartment, according to the recall.

Vehicle owners will be instructed, as a precautionary measure, to park the recalled Kia vehicles outside and away from structures until a remedy recall is performed.

Hyundai recalls more than 1.6 million vehicles on account of fire risk concerns

The Hyundai recall involves various models of more than 1.6 million Hyundai Accent, Azera, Elantra, Elantra Coupe, Equus, Genesis Coupe, Santa Fe, Santa Fe Sport, Tucson, Tucson Fuel Cell, Sonata Hybrid, Veloster, and Veracruz vehicles.

Hyundai said it is concerned the recalled vehicles were equipped with Anti-Lock Brake System modules that could leak brake fluid internally, eventually causing an electrical short that could increase the risk of an engine compartment fire.

Owners of the recalled vehicles can continue to drive them, but are being advised to park them outside and away from structures until a remedy is completed, according to the Hyundai recall.

Hyundai said vehicle owners and dealers will both be notified about the recall by Nov. 21, 2023.

Hyundai recalled nearly 38,000 of its model year 2021-2023 Hyundai Elantra hybrid electric vehicles earlier this month over concerns a software defect could cause them to experience a slow and unintended acceleration after their brake pedal is released.

  2. Velda Williams says:

My 2017 Hyundai Elantra is slow to accelerate when I release the brakes. Occasionally I get some kind of fuel smell inside my car. Mechanic can’t pinpoint the issue after keeping car and driving it. In 2019 I had to have 4 parts replaced which the mechanic said it was very unusual for these parts to go bad. Given the age of the car. The mileage as of today ( 10/4/23) on my car is 77,000 miles

I have a 2013 Hyundai Accent and I am very nervous reading this. This world is so unsafe with vehicles food the air they need to give everyone new cars for this dangerous news. When this happens they need to tell everyone to drop their vehicles off immediately not keep driving

We have a 2016 Optima. Please add the defective window motors to the class action lawsuit. We have replaced them and still have issues. They simply fall on their own. Dealers are charging over $600 per window motor to repair!

    1. Melissa L Hurd says:

I just had my 2014 kia optima engine replaced bc of a recall. Now this new RECALL on the break fluid system. And my passenger side window just fell one day. And I can’t afford $600 for a window motor. They should replace all these recalled cars with either new vehicles or the refund people the money they paid for our vehicles. This is beyond ridiculous. GOD BLESS US ALL SWEETHEART XOXOXOXOXOXOXO AMEN 💗 ❤ 🙏
