Children’s ATV, Bicycle Recall Overview:

  • Who: EGL Motor and Commencal are recalling products for kids, including ATVs and certain bicycles.
  • Why: The ATVS can exceed maximum speed limits and have other safety risk factors, and the bikes do not have a pedal brake.
  • Where: The recalls are nationwide.

Two companies that manufacture products for kids are recalling certain ATVS and bicycles as they may pose safety risks to children.

EGL Motor is recalling about 500 of its EGL and ACE-branded Youth All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) as the ATVs don’t comply with federal safety standards.

The recall notice was posted to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website Mar. 24 and includes EGL and ACE-branded Youth ATVs, models MADIX 110 and B125.

According to the recall, the B125 ATVs exceed the maximum speed limitations for vehicles intended for children ages 10 and older.

For the Madix 110, the parking brakes do not prevent the movement of the vehicle, while the handlebars on both ATVs pose a laceration hazard should the rider’s body or head impact the handlebars at a high rate of speed such as in a crash.

ATVs that fail to meet the mandatory safety requirements pose a risk of serious injury or death, the notice says.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled ATVs and contact EGL Motor to make an appointment for a free repair from an authorized repair shop,” the recall notice says. “Reflectors, headlights and a chest protector will be installed on the ATV. EGL will also repair the parking brake, speed capability and spark arrestor.”

The company said it has had no reports of injuries so far. It is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

The vehicles were sold in various colors, including orange, red, blue, pink and green, and marketed for children ages 10 and older. The products were sold at AWL Distribution, BV Powersports and other authorized dealerships nationwide from May 2020 through September 2020 for between $550 and $670.

Commencal Bicycles Recalled Due to Lack of Brakes

Meanwhile, Commencal is also recalling about 925 of its Ramones 14-Inch Bicycles as the bikes don’t have foot brakes that are federally required.

Federal regulations require bicycles with seat heights that measure at or below 25 inches to be equipped with foot brakes.

However, the bicycles are equipped only with hand brakes and can pose a crash hazard or a risk of injury to young children who might not be able to stop the bicycles using the handbrakes only.

“Consumers should immediately take the recalled bikes away from children, stop using them and contact the firm for a free repair kit. Commencal Corp. is contacting all purchasers directly by email,” the recall says.

The bikes were sold online at www.commencalusa.com from December 2014 through March 2021 for between $230 and $320. The makes and models of the recalled bikes can be found here

The company said it has had no reports of injuries so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

In related news, on Mar. 16, Specialized Bicycle Components recalled an additional 19,000 Sirrus bicycles over issues with the alloy crank. In September 2020, 36,000 Sirrus bicycles were recalled over the issue, which can allegedly pose fall and injury hazards.
