Home Depot storefront - ceiling fan recall

A ceiling fan recall has been issued for King of Fans’ Hampton Bay-brand products, reportedly affecting hundreds of thousands of fans sold by Home Depot.

The Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a recall notice for the 54-inch ceiling fans, noting the blades can detach while the product is in use, potentially hitting those in the area. The product affected is the Hampton Bay Mara Indoor/Outdoor Ceiling Fan.

The ceiling fan recall comes after 47 reports of blades detaching, causing property damage in four cases and injuring individuals in two.

The CPSC warns consumers to stop using the fan immediately. The manufacturer, King of Fans, has posted instructions about how to inspect the blades for any gaps or movement. If the blades are loose, the CPSC says King of Fans will provide a free replacement.

According to the CPSC, the fans were sold exclusively through Home Depot between April and October 2020. They retail for $150, the agency notes. About 182,000 were sold in the U.S., with another 8,800 sold in Canada; however, Home Depot maintains that only around 80,000 units were sold, according to CNET.

The fans come in several colors, including matte white, matte black, black and polished nickel; however, according to the manufacturer, not all Mara fans are affected by the recall.

The problems stem from “an isolated manufacturing defect with the assembly of the fan blade’s locking clip to the fan flywheel,” King of Fans said, according to CNN Business.

“One of the two screws retaining the locking clip is not adequately secured to the flywheel,” King of Fans said in a statement about the recall. “If this occurs, the blade may detach from the fan during use, posing an injury hazard.”

Ceiling Fan Recalls

The King of Fans ceiling fan recall is not the first such product to be pulled from the shelves this year.

In February, Fanim Industries recalled its Harbor Breeze Santa Ana ceiling fan after consumers submitted 210 reports of blades detaching.

The Fanim ceiling fan was sold exclusively at Lowe’s between May 2014 and January 2016. Approximately 70,000 ceiling fans were affected by the recall.

Recalls Affect Hundreds of Thousands of Consumers

While nearly 200,000 consumers are impacted by the most recent ceiling fan recall, hundreds of thousands of others have been hit with recall notices.

Earlier this month, Black and Decker and Fiskars recalled 550,000 Craftsman chainsaws over concerns they can start without warning. The recall reportedly came after consumers suffering lacerations from using the chainsaws.

Additionally, a recall notice was issued Dec. 10 for more than 900,000 Sunbeam crockpots. Reportedly, the lid can become dangerously pressurized when the crockpot is used at high temperatures, causing it to suddenly detach and injure consumers.

According to the CSPC, consumer product incidents, including property damage, injuries and even deaths, cost the U.S. more than $1 trillion each year.

I bought one, was about to have an electrician install it this week, am glad I saw the recall. Now I do not want to install it and want a refund; I already bought something else because the electrician is still coming tomorrow. Can I get help getting a refund?
