Recall Alert: AmazonBasics Memory Foam Mattresses Overview:

  • Who: Amazon is recalling one of its mattresses.
  • Why: The companyโ€™s AmazonBasics Memory Foam Mattresses fails to meet the mandatory federal flammability standard for mattresses, posing a fire hazard.
  • Where: The mattresses were sold nationwide.

Amazon is recalling more than 15,000 of its memory foam mattresses as they pose a fire hazard.

In a recall issued Nov. 18 on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website, Amazon said it was recalling about 15,300 of its AmazonBasics Memory Foam Mattresses in 10โ€ and 12โ€ sizes.

The mattresses fail to meet the mandatory federal flammability standard for mattresses, posing a fire hazard, the recall stated.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits. No injuries have been reported so far in relation to the recall, Amazon said.

The affected mattresses are white with โ€œamazonbasicsโ€ printed on the foot panel and a white federal label with โ€œAmazon.com Services Inc.โ€ identified as the importer.ย

They were sold through Amazon.com from April 2020 through March 2021, for between $150 and $450.ย

Amazon is currently contacting all buyers of the mattress to arrange for direct shipment of a cover for consumers to place over the mattresses that will bring them into compliance with federal safety regulations. The cover is free.

Mattresses can sometimes be at the center of class action lawsuits.ย

In 2020, A class action lawsuit was filed against mattress company Zinus, with plaintiffs claiming the mattress could open and release hazardous glass fibers.

The lawsuit alleged that once the outer cover of said mattresses are unzipped, large glass fibers could spill out, causing serious injuries and property damage.
