Adult bed rails recalled due to entrapment, asphyxiation risks

Two Nova Medical Products adult bed rails are being recalled as they pose an entrapment risk, which can cause people to die from asphyxiation.

The recall was posted to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website Dec. 22. 

It applies to about 20,000 Nova Medical Products Home Bed Rails (Model No. 6093) and Home Bed Rails with Legs (Model No. 6094). 

According to the recall, when the bedrail is attached, users can become entrapped within the bed rail or between the bed rail and the side of the mattress. 

“This poses a serious entrapment hazard and risk of death by asphyxiation.”

No incidents have been reported so far, the company said. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Nova Medical will repair or replace the products, recall says

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bed rails and contact Nova Medical Products for a free repair or replacement, depending on the model, the recall states. 

Nova Medical Products expects the remedy to be available beginning in March 2023.

The products were sold at AdaptHealth, San Diego Medical Supply, Bellevue Healthcare, CareLinc Medical Equipment & Supply and medical supply stores nationwide from Jan. 2019 through Nov. 2022 for between $55 and $80.

Last year, the CPSC and Compass Health Brands recalled about 104,900 Carex brand adult portable bed rails. When attached to an adult’s bed, users may become trapped between the rail and the bed, possibly leading to death by asphyxiation, the recall said.
