asko dishwasherASKO dishwashers were recently recalled due to concerns that electrical defects can cause overheating, leading to a fire.

On Sept. 26, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada announced the recall of thousands of ASKO dishwasher products.

Around 26,600 units are included in the recall with an additional 4,300 units sold in Canada. The ASKO dishwashers are around 24 inches wide, 22 inches deep, and between 32 and 35 inches tall.

The stainless steel appliances have customizable doors and handles. The brand name ASKO is featured on the front of the appliance and in the center of the dishwasher’s top dish rack.

Several ASKO dishwashers are included in the recall. Consumers can identify whether or not their dishwasher is included by checking the model and serial number found on the left side of the dishwasher door opening. The following models are included in the recall:

These ASKO dishwashers were sold at authorized dealers for between $1,000 and $2,000 between October 2016 and July 2019. The appliances included in the recall were reportedly manufactured in Slovenia between 2016 and 2017.

According to the recall notice, the power cord on these dishwasher models is prone to overheating while the appliance is in use. This can reportedly pose a fire hazard. ASKO has received 53 reports of power cord overheating, although no property damage or injuries have been reported.

Consumers who purchased the affected appliances have been ordered to stop using their dishwasher, turn off power to the dishwasher at the circuit board, and contact ASKO. The company can reportedly help customers schedule a free, in-home repair with a local ASKO certified service professional.

Although the CPSC has not specified the cause of the defect, the ASKO website notes that the issue is related to a “possible fault” found in the dishwashers’ power cable. Due to “insufficient contact,” the cable can reportedly overheat – causing “smoke to escape the dishwasher housing into the consumer’s home.”

ASKO notes that only the specified appliances have been deemed unsafe and that their other products are completely unaffected.

“ASKO is committed to upholding the highest standards of quality craftsmanship and reliability in all of our brands,” ASKO noted on their website.

“We are committed to the safety of our customers. To insure their safety, we are voluntarily recalling and repairing these affected units and working with federal authorities throughout the process.”

If consumers have any further questions about the recall, they can contact ASKO North America at 888-651-9376 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or via email at [email protected]. ASKO recommends having the appliance model and serial numbers on hand before calling.
